Consortiwm De-orllewin a Chanolbarth Cymru Higher Level Teaching Assistant Assessment Programme 2014 - 2015 South West and Mid Wales Consortium The HLTA Assessment Programme • It is NOT a training programme. It is an ASSESSMENT programme • Assessment is about enabling candidates to demonstrate that they meet the National Standards identified for Higher Level Teaching Assistants • It is based on what Teaching Assistants normally do in the classroom and school • It requires a high level of commitment from the candidate to complete and submit the tasks within the three month time line of the programme. • It is not intended to demand more from Head Teachers and other colleagues than normal arrangements for management and performance review Elements of the Assessment Programme • Completion of pre Briefing Day 1 reading and tasks • Attendance at three Briefing Days • Completion of four written tasks • An assessor’s visit to the candidate’ school Assessment Process - Briefing Days • Candidates are required to attend three Briefing Days that will take place in the Halliwell Centre in Carmarthen • The objective of the three Briefing Days is to support candidates to: • Understand the National Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants • Complete the four written tasks • Collect documentary evidence to support their written tasks • Prepare for the school visit Assessment Process - Tasks Task 1: An account of working with an individual pupil Task 2: An account of working with a group of pupils Task 3: An account of working with a whole class group Task 4: Five scenarios of tasks undertaken by teaching assistants Collection of documentary evidence to support the four tasks Assessment Process - The School Visit The school visit will last for a period of three hours during the course of which the assessor will meet with:The candidate The class teacher The head teacher The assessor will also have a period of study time during which they will scrutinize and verify the documentary evidence that has been prepared by the candidate. Assessment Process - School Commitment Schools are required to support the assessment process by:• Releasing candidates to enable them to attend the three briefing sessions • Having an understanding of the HLTA Standards and the assessment process • Supporting the candidates to complete the school based tasks • Facilitating the assessor’s visit to the school Assessment Schedule 2014 • October / November Awareness raising briefings held across the region • Week Beginning 6th October Application Packs available from the Regional website • • 2015 • Briefing Sessions in the Halliwell Centre Carmarthen: 19th January 3rd February 25th February • 27th March Closing date for receipt of Candidates tasks • April / May School Visits • Week beginning 7th July Outcome letters issued to candidates 21st November Closing date for applications Week Beginning 8th December Candidates notified of the outcome of the selection process Application Process Application Requirements • Candidates are required to have:- • Achieved a qualification on first language Welsh or English/Literacy and Mathematics/numeracy at level 2 of the National Qualifications framework equivalent to GCSE A-C, or above and they must be able to provide proof of the details of those qualifications • Sufficient experience to provide evidence that they meet the standards in relation to the HLTA Status • Have had experience of leading the learning of a whole class without a teacher being present • The endorsement and support of the Headteacher Application Process • Entry onto the programme is through a selection process • Applications should include all the necessary information to enable the members of the selection panel to make an informed judgment as to whether you are ready to be assessed against the National Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants • Applications need to have been received in the ERW office by the 21st of November Application Process - Information Required • Candidate details • Required qualifications • Other qualifications • Professional development experiences • Current and previous roles • Details of how the candidate works with – an individual child – a group of pupils – a whole class without the presence of a teacher • Head Teacher’s endorsement of the candidate’s application Application Requirements Numeracy and Literacy Certificates • Candidates should provide copies of their literacy and numeracy certificates with their application • If candidates are awaiting their certificates a result letter should be provided. • Original copies of literacy and numeracy certificates MUST be presented for scrutiny during Briefing Day 1. • Failure to present the original copies of the literacy and numeracy certificates will result in the candidate being removed from the assessment process.
