Historically important diseases include the Plague, Smallpox, and Influenza. Recently, emerging and reemerging diseases such as HIV/AIDS, SARS, and H1N1 are evidence that we have not conquered infectious and contagious diseases. • GEO 261 focuses on agents that cause major diseases, how diseases develop, how our immune system attempts to protect us, and the human and economic impacts of diseases. • Specific attention is directed toward the role that globalization has played in enabling the diffusion of these new and re-emerging diseases across the world.
