GEO 261 Global Dynamics
of Health and Disease
Throughout history humankind has suffered
from pandemics - diseases that periodically
spread around the world and kill hundreds of
millions of people. Historically important
diseases include the Plague, Smallpox, and
Influenza. Recently, emerging and reemerging diseases such as HIV/AIDS, SARS,
and H1N1 are evidence that we have not
conquered infectious and contagious
diseases.
• GEO 261 focuses on agents that cause
major diseases, how diseases develop,
how our immune system attempts to
protect us, and the human and economic
impacts of diseases.
• Specific attention is directed toward the
role that globalization has played in
enabling the diffusion of these new and
re-emerging diseases across the world.
