Unpacking Mathematics Florida Standards
Grade Level/Course: Grade Two Mathematics
Standard: MAFS.2.G.1.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, and describe the shares using the words
halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc. and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize
that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
Concepts and Skills – what students should know and be able to do
Second grade students partition/decompose circles and rectangles into two, three, and four equal shares.
Students should also work with the vocabulary terms halves, thirds, half of, third of, and fourth of.
Students also need to recognize that equal shares of identical wholes may not have the same shape.

Different Halves
Different Fourths
Halves, Thirds, and Fourths
How Many Fourths are in a Whole?
Prerequisite Standards:
MAFS.1.G.1.3
Vertical Alignment
Prerequisite Skills/Concepts:
Partition/decompose circles and rectangles into two
and four equal shares and describe these shares using
terms such as halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the
phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the
whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for
these examples that decomposing into more equal
shares creates smaller shares.
Future Standards:
MAFS.3.G.1.2
Future Skills/Concepts:
Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express
the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole.

Unpacking Mathematics Florida Standards
Grade Level/Course: Grade 6 Mathematics
Standard:
MAFS.6.G.1.3
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a
side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the
context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Concepts and Skills – what students should know and be able to do
Students need to know how to plot coordinates in all four quadrants.
Students should have an understanding of finding the absolute value of a number.
Mathematics Formative Assessment (MFAS): mfas.cpalms.org
Fence Length
Polygon Coordinates
Polygon Grid
Patio Grid
Prerequisite Standards:
Vertical Alignment
Prerequisite Skills/Concepts:
MAFS.5.G.1.2
Represent real world and mathematical problems by
graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate
plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the
context of the situation.
Future Standards:
Future Skills/Concepts:
MAFS.7.G.1.2
Draw geometric shapes with given parameters. Focus
on constructing triangles from three measures of
angles or sides, noticing when the conditions
determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or
no triangle.
