Air Space Dep. 3 Mission of the ITAF Met Service • to observe the weather with quality and worldwide interoperability, broadcast data internationally; • to produce weather analysis and forecast, taking care of their control and development; • to provide services in meteorology supporting national needs and international duties; • to issue weather warnings for the safety of operational and civil aviation (ICAO, and other bodies); • to understand end user requirements and develop new systems and products accordingly; • to prepare meteorological personnel, in view of WMO rules and standards; • to represent Italy with international meteorological organizations and consortia. 4 Nowcasting and safety support ITAF Meteorological Service provides real-time weather monitoring to all Italian Air Force operational assets, manned and unmanned, combat, support and trainings. Among users there is the growing need for Space Weather informations. 5 ITAF leader for NATO NRF Met in 2013 and 2014 6 ITAF approaching the field of Space Weather Numerous operational activities are new fields of application, where space knowledge does not mean only side information but capacity augmentation, as weather, in ops missions. These units are the unique GEOMETOC information centre. It is planned to implement their service with Space Weather information. 10 ITAF and UN-WMO Italy joined in 1950 the United Nations – World Meteorological Organization, ITAF has been representing the Nation in the Organization since the beginning: the Chief of the Meteorological Department of ITAF is therefore the Permanent Representative of Italy with WMO, he is also a member of the Executive Council. The actual Permanent Representative of Italy with WMO is Brig. Gen. Luigi De Leonibus 11 WMO Congress In May 2011, the sixteenth WMO Congress recognized the importance of Space Weather, including this topic into the mission of National Meteorological Services. It is already planned for future European satellites as Meteosat Third Generation and METOP Second generation space environment basic observations for spacecraft monitoring. OPS users believe that something more dedicated and sophisticated should be planned in future series (GEOS-R like). EUMETSAT METOP 17 EUMETNET 18 EUMETNET EUMETNET, the European Coordination of the National Meteorological Services already included among its topics the Space Weather issue. 19 Way forward Europe has main elements to set up a European capacity for a Space Weather service: observational infrastructures, both space and ground-based, science knowledge among research and academic, and service expertise among NMS. Italy is interested to contribute into the development and implementation of the European Space Weather service capacity. ITAF is contributing into the development and implementation of the Space Weather service within European (H2020) and National framework (PRNM). 20
