Pineapple – Thailand
March,, 2014
March
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volume of raw material during March has not been
improved from previous month; factories were not receiving
enough raw materials and had to compete hard for it to keep
their operations going. Raw material prices have been moving
up continuously exceeding the level of THB 8.0 / kg by the
end of March, the highest level since last five years. For the
coming 2-3 months, there are no signs of a significant
improvement; only minor improvements are expected.

PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market prices for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 are moving up to USD 1,350 - 1,400 pmt FOB Thailand
for freshly produced PJC from winter crop. PJC Stocks in
Thailand are reducing as the fresh production of PJC has
been kept at a low level due to unusual limited supply. Some
factories have stopped offering PJC (for certain
specifications: like b/a 20-24 ) as they are still behind
delivery schedule. Unless buyers are ready to consider at
least current spot prices, factories will organize themselves
in such a way to produce max. solids to be packed in
another way than juice (concentrate). It seems more an
more likely that for PJC the price will be firming further
during next 3-5 months, especially once summer crop has
ended, low season starts and it appears that there has been
not enough stock been built up.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
There was limited rainfall during March in the Southern areas
which are the main pineapple growing areas. In the East
areas, rainfall was normal. Temperatures during March in the
South and East areas have risen from the previous month
more or less in line the normal pattern.
Rising temperatures affect to the ripeness of the raw material.
For PJC higher b/a ratio ranges are to be expected in
combination with decreasing nitrate levels
.

The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, remain is now at least USD 1,400 pmt,
but will rise further as soon as old stocks for sale in
Rotterdam will disappear. New higher prices from origin will
start to gradually affect the spot market price in Europe.

During January and February PJC shipments from Thailand
worldwide were at 19,800 MT appr. 10% down compared to
the same period last year. About 40% was, as usual,
shipped to the Netherlands. Clearly up were shipments to
Japan, Iran and some countries that are normally not
importing so much such as Belgium, Greece and Lybia.
Shipments to rest of the world were all down. This trend is
partly cause by the raw material supply problems and partly
because importers are not yet ready to pay significantly
higher prices for PJC.
