Jetse Bremer I just can’t wait to be king The Gents – a choir to watch Vocaal ensemble The Gents is een voor Nederland uniek gezelschap dat zich in korte tijd een vooraanstaande plaats heeft verworven binnen internationale muziekwereld. Their intonation, perfect unisono, sensitive handeling of texts makes this an ensemble to follow. Chanticleer has some real competition here” International Record Review: “The Gents produce a highly polished, rich and smooth sound, with impeccable intonation, articulation and ensemble” De basis voor de kwaliteit en de professionaliteit van The Gents werd gelegd binnen het Roder Jongenskoor. Sinds september 2005 woont Béni Csillag in Nederland. King Henry VIII Pastime with Good Company (The King’s Ballad) Pastime with good company I love and shall until I die; Gruch who lust, but none deny, So God be pleas’d, thus live will I. For my pastance, Hunt sing and dance; My heart is set All goodly sport For my comfort; Who shall me let? Youth must have some dalliance, Of good or ill some pastance; Company me thinks then best All thoughts and fancies to digest; For idleness Is chief mistress Of vices all. Then who can say But mirth and play Is best of all? Company with honesty Is virtue, vices to flee: Company is good and ill But every man hath his free will. The best ensue, The worst eschew, My mind shall be: Virtue to use, Vice to refuse, Thus shall I use me. Thomas Morley Ho! Who Comes Here? Ho! Who comes here all along with bagpiping and drumming? O ‘tis the Morris dance I see a coming. Come ladies out, come quickly! And see about how trim they dance and trickly. Hey! There again! How the bells they shake it! Now for our town once more and take it! Soft awhile, not away so fast! They melt them. Piper! What Piper ho! Who calls? Be hanged, knave! See’st thou not the dancers how they swelt them? Out there, out awhile! You come, I say, in. There give the hobby-horse more room to play in! John Wilbye Adieu, sweet Amarillis Adieu, sweet Amaryllis! For since to part your will is; O heavy tiding, Here is for me no biding, Yet once again, Ere that I part with you, Amaryllis, Amaryllis, sweet adieu! Thomas Ravenscroft A round of three country dances in one Sing after fellows as you hear me, A toy that seldom is seena; Three country dances in one to be, A pretty conceit as I weena! Robin Hood, Robin Hood, said Little John, Come dance before the Queena! In a red petticoat and a green jacket, A white hose and a greena! Now foot it as I do, Tom boy Tom, Now foot it as I do swithena! And hick thou must trick it all alone, Till Robin come leaping in between, ah! The cramp is in my purse full sore, No money will bide there ina! And if I had some solve therefore, O lightly then would I sing, ah! Hey ho, the crampa! I would die that you might live. Oh live! for death, alas, is culpable when other lives depend upon your own. Henry Purcell They shall be as happy They shall be as happy as they’re fair; Love shall fill all the places of care; And every time the sun shall display His rising light, It shall be to them a new wedding-day; And when he sets, a new nuptial night. King Lily-of-the-Valley, he lowers his sad head so heavy and weak; and the silver helmet shines in the pale summer twilight. Around the bier, a spider weaves from the “incense place” with floral scent an incense [that] slowly flows; the entire forest is full of fragrance. From the birch’s rocking crown, from the wind’s waving green house small songs of sorrow sound; the entire forest is filled up with whistling. A message is whispered through the valley about a king’s sorrow among whispering leaves, in the wide kingdoms of the forest, from the capital of the Lilies-of-the-Valley. Bitten by insects she was naked for them, bitten by terrible unknown winds, all bites and wounds. She gave her blood without measuring it. Sea salt He is leaning against the branches of the plum tree. His beardless face is touched with brine for he is a sailor, though so young. On shore he is always amongst trees and roses, yet the brine does not come of his skin. Only kisses will remove it, someone told him. But then, what good are kisses, after all? For when he is at sea the brine will envelope his face and lips again, The brine is in love also with his skin. (It is rough on the surface of skin.) She lay between his armpits She lay between his armpits hoping to get a rise out of him, the hair on his navel alone drove her mad. She bit him as he slumbered, and he did not awaken. I must have what’s resting so calm between your legs. She put her finest sharpest teeth on it, he awoke and cried, blood flowed freely, she sighed, he moaned, he yelled and she screamed, they panted like old trains going full speed, they hollered, yelped, tore sheets, curtains, mashed boxes, overturned bureaux, broke bedboards, turned over bedsprings, lay on carpets, ripped open the cedar chest, banged on the floor, jumped to the ceiling. Jetse Bremer Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day Two babies were made before they let loose one of the other. But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st, Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade, I have told you your hands are salt I have seen your hands asleep the veins are talking to me as you lie your hands are white as salt they invite the lips and even the teeth the salt-white hands that lie on the quilt command a terrible kiss. From rivers, from the earth itself From rivers, and from the earth itself clouds and steam arise like the breath of the lovers. Sounds pass through walls and spread through closed mansions. Stiff cold penetrates to the bone. Rising on his elbow, the younger boy Rolls back his foreskin as he would his eyelid, revealing the corona glandis to his rapt companion. The moon is after all a nocturnal sun. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed; When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st. So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
