1 LIWA The city LIWA is located in the Barisan Mountains in the southern part of the residency Benkoelen about 20 kilometres northeast of Kroë. Actually, it is situated in the direct neighbourhood of the lake Ranau in the south-eastern part of the residency Palembang. A sub-post-office was opened here in 1941 and it reported to the post office of Tandjongkarang (Tdk, is that correct??). Is het dan niet opmerkelijk dat de Japanners het indelen bij Benkoelen? Before the war the long bar cancel 6/010 was used (fig. 1), and this cancel was also used during the Japanese occupation (fig. 2). The Japanese cancel 220 has not been reported from this office. Figure 1: The pre-war long bar cancel 6/010 of LIWA dated in December and October 1941. Figure 2: The pre-war long bar cancel 6/010 of LIWA dated in July 1943 (=18), April 1944 (=19) and April 1945 (=20), all three show the Showa calendar. Probably, after the transfer of sovereignty the original pre-war long bar cancel was still in use, however, now with a 24-hour indication changing the cancel into a type 6 (fig. 3).
