Friday, November14, 2014 No. 13 Week no. 46 BjBjerknes Centre for Climate Research Allégaten 70, 5007 Bergen DIRECTOR’S NOTE What’s happening? Climate research and the green shift A few weeks ago the 13th annual Transatlantic Science Week was arranged in Toronto, Canada 27-29 October. The TSW meetings are organized by the Norwegian Embassies in Canada and US with the purpose of “promoting enhanced cooperation between Canadian, American and Norwegian stakeholders in research, innovation and higher education”. They are also a very important arena for dialogue between the research communities and policymakers. The Bjerknes Centre co-organised a session on the Arctic climate system with speakers from Bergen, Tromsø, Boulder and Toronto, and excellent science and networking skills were demonstrated. Next year the meeting will be in Boston and have focus on the ocean. Local hosts will be Harward, MIT and Woods Hole so this should be an excellent opportunity to refresh collaboration. This week the third 2°C climate magazine was officially released. The magazine is to a large extent written by Bjerknes scientists and published by the Norwegian Climate Foundation. This guarantees a widespread distribution as 10 000 printed copies are sent to politicians, business leaders, media, schools and others. The magazine and all figures can also be downloaded from tograder.no. The theme of this issue is water and climate, and I am happy to see that so many early career scientists have contributed with articles. Thanks to all who contributed, and especially to Gudrun for coordinating the input from us. The 2°C magazine was given to the more than 1000 participants that took part in the Zerok Conference in Oslo this week. This has grown to become the most important meeting place for discussing renewable energy and green growth, and it is encouraging to listen to industry and finance leaders who are willing to take an active role in this shift. And based on what was said by the leaders of most political parties in the closure session, it is reason to believe that also the politicians will eventually follow. Some people at the centre have already started thinking about Christmas. This year traditions are changed, so instead of the traditional Bjerknes party we will for the first time experience an exciting and overwhelming Blå-Jul-Tur. So those of you affiliated to the Bjerknes Centre, please sign on as soon as possibly. It will be fun! Tore KIKKI IN ACTION AT THE ZEROKONFERANSE Kikki Kleiven had a major contribution at the Zerokonferanse “The green shift – Road map 2030” on 12-13 November in Oslo. Kleiven was interviewed during the plenary warm-up session on day 1, and moderated a special session on IPCC “Climate challenges: a short version” on day 2, with panelists Rajendra K. Pachauri, IPCC chair, and lead authors Karen O'Brian, UiO and Jan Fuglestvedt. CICERO. The Zerokonferanse is an annual event about the green shift towards a zero emission society. The conference focuses on solutions and gathers top leaders from the government, political parties, the industry and businesses. It is during this occasion the new issue of the 2oC magazine is launched (see article below). From Bjerknes participated Tore Furevik, Eystein Jansen, Kerim Nisancioglu and Gudrun Sylte. The programme and a selection of talks are available on-line at http://www.zerokonferansen.no Gudrun Sylte jetSTREAM KICKOFF MEETING IN BERGEN On 3 & 4 November, GFI hosted the kickoff meeting for the NFR FRINATEK funded project on Atmospheric jet variability: linking STRucture, Evolution AND Mechanisms (jetSTREAM, 2014-2018). Jet streams are a key feature of the global scale wind systems that shape Earth's climate, and the low-frequency variability of jet streams reflects shifting weather patterns and regimes. Understanding jet variability is thus essential for understanding year-to-year variations in regional climate and weather extremes, and projecting how these will change in a warming world. jetSTREAM aims to identify the dynamical origins of jet variability by bridging the gap between existing theoretical and statistical (observational) views of the extra-tropical atmospheric Tip Bjerknes Times: ellen.grong@bjerknes.uib.no http://www.bjerknes.uib.no/pages.asp?kat=60&lang=1 1 circulation. To achieve this goal, the project has assembled a home team of atmospheric scientists supplemented with external expertise on dynamics (Joe LaCasce, UiO; Justin Wettstein, OSU; Tim Woollings, Oxford) and computer graphics (Wilmot Li, Adobe Research). The visitors enjoyed some relatively nice November weather, made good use of their Bjerknes umbrellas, and were sorely disappointed to have been a few days too early to enjoy some sheep's heads. Camille Li JetStreamers brainstorming during dinner BJERKNES AT THE TRANSATLANTIC SCIENCE WEEK 2014 A delegation from Bergen attended the 13th edition of the TSW. This year theme was: The Arctic: Societies, Sustainability, and Safety, organised around three blocks: (1) Arctic Climate Science, (2) Arctic Safety and Cross-Border Knowledge Needs, and (3) Arctic Research-Based Industrial Development and Resource Management. The TSW is a highly profiled event that aims at enhancing cooperation between Canadian, American and Norwegian stakeholders in research, innovation and higher education. As such, it gathers ministers, directors of research funding bodies, University rectors, deans and key scientists, as well as representatives from the industry and business. The Bjerknes Centre has played a central role in previous events, notably during the early 2000´s when it was hosted at Carnegie in Washington DC. Tore Furevik, together with Kimberly Strong, UToronto were moderators of a session entitled: “Canary or amplifier? Climate system challenges”, that featured presentations from Paul Kushner, UToronto (atmosphere-cryosphere linkages), Tor Eldevik, UiB & Bjerknes (large-scale atm-ocean dynamics), Julienne C. Stroeve, UColorado Boulder (Sea ice measurements and predictability) and Paul Wassmann (arctic ecosystems), UTromsø. UiB rector Dag Rune Olsen was the last speaker at the closing session where he presented the theme for the TSC 2015 in Boston, Massachussets: “Blue Frontiers”. Participants had also the opportunity to attend side events: “Institutional partnerships and degree collaboration between Norway and Canada” and “Arctic brainstorm: opportunities for international research collaboration in Arctic science”. Furevik, Strong, Kushner, Stroeve, Eldevik and Wassmann after holding a successful session Beatriz Balino THE 2014 ISSUE OF 2°C IS OUT ON THE STREETS! Water is the theme for the 2014 edition of 2°C. The magazine includes articles on sea-level rise, extreme precipitation, melting ice in the Arctic and in Greenland. It includes a three page photo report on the ACDC summer school in Greenland, Petra writes on sea level rise from a personal view, Willem reports from geological field work at Greenland, Tore gives a comment on the "hiatus" in global warming, Ingrid writes a chronology on a warned flood, to mention some of the texts. Many thanks to the writing team that gathered in spring to act as journalists, writing on not only their own research, but also talked to and refereed other publications and reports by other scientists. The team included: Petra Langebroek, Iselin Medhaug, Ingrid Onarheim, Svetlana Sorokina, Willem van der Bilt, Jo Brendryen, Ellen Viste and Truls Johannessen. Additional thanks to all the other contributors for the provision of data, facts, photos as well as proof reading, and much more. Langehaug Position Researcher at G.C. Rieber Climate Institute, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC). How long have you been at BCCR? Since I started my PhD at NERSC in 2008, so that will be about six years. Education PhD in physical oceanography from the University of Bergen. Background: Before becoming a “bergenser” I spent most of my life in Haugesund (a couple of hours south of Bergen). In spite of that, many persons have asked me “Where in Sweden are you from?” I guess people are a little confused because of my strange Norwegian dialect J What is it you do exactly at work? My main activity is to analyze output from climate models. I have mostly been focusing on decadal variations in the North Atlantic Ocean with emphasize on/fascination of the water mass transformation. At the time being I’m assessing whether or not climate models have predictability on decadal time scales in the Nordic Seas. Why climate research? The idea was to study meteorology, but after discovering physical oceanography as I entered the Geophysical Institute, that became my destiny. Since my focus is mainly on decadal variability in the ocean, I suddenly found myself doing climate research. What extracurricular activities do you have? My small family (but highly active 1-year old son) enjoys very much to go to Sotra, especially to those places where we are close to the open ocean. Otherwise, I’m always glad to enjoy a good beer with good conversation. Do you have a favourite song, band or artist? Recently I got very excited to discover the band “Vintage Trouble” (blues rock band). The Norwegians “Nico & Vinz” is also a favorite at the time being. Your favourite food? I would go for Tex-mex and grandma’s “fiskepudding i karrisaus”. The best and worst about Bergen? I like Bergen any time of the year. The best in Bergen must be the pub “Henrik” with all of its varieties in tap beer… Tip Bjerknes Times: ellen.grong@bjerknes.uib.no http://www.bjerknes.uib.no/pages.asp?kat=60&lang=1 3 BJERKNES–GFI COLLOQUIUM The Bjerknes–GFI colloquium, which takes place mostly every Monday at 11:15 in the GFI East wing auditorium, is a weekly forum for the presentation of research at BCCR and GFI.
