• First invented by Ruth Handler in
1959
•Barbie symbolizes the free
woman. (Free as in, free to expose
herself and live with little moral
limitations) This disagreed with
many cultures.
•Middle Eastern areas disapproved
greatly of Barbie. Japan also did
not like the original doll. Both areas
created their own dolls to sell to
their children.
