Fashion B: Standard 11 Created by: Kris Caldwell Timpanogos High School Principles of Design Balance Proportion Emphasis Rhythm Balance Equilibrium or steadiness among the parts of a design. It is the visual distribution of weight. Formal balance: symmetrical Informal balance: assymmetrical Proportion The spacial, or size, relationship of all of the parts in a design to each other and to the whole. Also called “scale”. Body is 8 heads tall. 3/8 is waist to top of head. 5/8 is from waist down. Styles that complement that natural figure are more flattering and stay in style longer. Emphasis Concentration of interest in a particular part or area of a design. One part is more important or more noticeable, it is the center of the outfit. It is best to have one area of interest. Rhythm The pleasing arrangement of the design elements so the eye moves well over the apparel. It directs the flow of eye movement. Repetition: Can be a repeat of lines, shapes, colors, or textures Gradation: Also called progression. An increase or decrease in design elements. Transition:A fluid rhythm created when a curved line leads the eye over an angle. Opposition: hen lines meet to form right angles. Radial Arrangement: Line come from a central point.
