Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

Essential Question –

How do resources affect the way that people live and work?

 Renewable Resources –

Natural Resources that

“cannot” be used up.

 Non-Renewable resources- Natural resources that “can” be used up.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

What are Natural Resources?

Air, water and soil

Biological resources - plants and animals

Raw materials (minerals, oil, coal and natural gas)

Space and land

Wind, geothermal (heat from the inside of the earth), tidal and solar energy

Natural resources are often classified into renewable, unlimited, and non-renewable resources.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

 Renewable resources are usually living and therefore can renew themselves assuming they are not killed off or over harvested. Water and soil are non-living.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

 Unlimited resources- They are all renewable but they do not need regeneration or re-growth.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

 Non-Renewable resources can’t be replaced. When they are used up they are gone.

There are nearly 4000 oil platforms in this small part of the

Gulf of Mexico alone. There are over 40,000 world wide.

 Natural gas is an important fuel source and a potent greenhouse gas. Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo extensive processing to remove almost all materials other than methane.

Continent by continent

We are going to chart the Energy and mineral resources of the world.

Turn to page 74.

Look at each continent and make tally marks on the chart for each natural resource.

When you are done, decide which continent has the most of each resource and write it in the column

“Who has most?”
