Terror and Danger Grip France •Early 1793, France was at war with much of Europe and with itself •Including Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, and Prussia •With-in France groups were fighting Committee of Public Safety •12 member committee that had almost absolute power as it battle to save the revolution •Maximilien Robespierre led the Committee of Public Safety Reign of Terror •September 1793 – July 1794 •About 300,000 arrested •17,000 were executed Robespierre Arrested •National Convention turned on the Committee of Public Safety •July 27, 1794- Robespierre was arrested •Executed the next day Executions slowed •After the heard of Robespierre and other radicals fell, executions slowed dramatically Third Stage •Constitution of 1795 set up a five man Directory and a two-house legislature •Directory held power from 1795 – 1799 •Corrupt leaders lined their own pockets •Failed to solve pressing problems Third Stage (Continue) •Election of 1797 supporters of the constitutional monarchy won the majority of the seats in the legislature •Politicians turn to Napoleon and he outwitted all of them Nationalism •A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country
