The Intertidal Zone*
- The zone closest to the shore,
sometimes referred to as the
shoreline. The intertidal zone is
usually above water at low tide
and below water at high tide.

The Neritic Zone*
- Above the continental shelf. The
neritic zone is the area of the
ocean extending from the low tide
mark to the end of a continental
shelf.

- Sometimes referred to as the
oceanic zone. The deep zone
begins offshore, starting at the
end of a continental shelf. The
deep zone is 65% of all ocean
water.

- The submerged border of a
continent that slopes gradually
down.

- Microscopic organisms that
inhabit the upper, sunny layers of
oceans and most fresh water.
Phytoplankton produce most of
the world’s oxygen.
