DSI Options for MATS
Compliance
Pat Mongoven
ARIPPA Aug 2013
MATS Acid Gas Requirements
SO2 < 0.2 lbs/MMBtu or HCl < 0.002 lbs/MMBtu
Can you meet MATS
with just more stone?
What other
options do
you have?
If so – what will it cost?
– Stone Cost?
– Fuel Cost to Calcine?
– Can you get the additional stone/fuel
out of the bed fast enough?
– O & M Costs (more handling, grinding, etc)?

HCl Control with Hydrated Lime
• Reactivity (thermodynamic):
– SO3 > SO2 > HF > HCl (thermodynamic)
• Kinetic (collisions) are critical
– Distribution in duct is key to good removal rates
– In flight capture
– Good coating on baghouse bags

Hydrated Lime - Recommended System
• Variable speed feed blower
• Use Air-to-air heat exchanger for
temperature control
• Myrlen air sweeps on cone of weigh bin
• Drop Through Rotary Valve
• Hydrate: Air > 0.6 lbs hyd:lb air
– Pickup velocity >3000 ft/min
• Minimal bends; smooth unions
• Piping/Lance diameter > 1.25”
• Capital Costs ~ $1.5 - $2.0MM

Waste Coal CFB Summary
• Hydrated lime can achieve MATS compliance in EITHER HCl or
SO2.
• Removal of SO2 was better at the higher furnace temperatures FSI
• Removal of HCl was better at the lower temperature injection
point (pre-bag house) - DSI
• Hydrate did not have any negative effect on Bag House or fly ash.
• Lowest cost MATS compliance – HCl or SO2 ?? Will be plant
specific.
• Mississippi Lime has a production facility in Weirton WV & we’d
be happy to talk with ARIPPA members about future testing to
better understand economics of hydrate feed for MATS
compliance.
