Some people prefer to get up
early
9 - Some people prefer to get up early in the morning and start
the day’s work. Others prefer to get up later in the day and
work until late at night. Which do you prefer?
• This is actually an interesting question for me,
because I’ve, I’ve done both, and I’ve enjoyed
both at different times. As I have gotten a little
bit older, however, I believe that getting up in
the morning and getting the work done, and
having your nights to relax, and enjoy yourself,
for me, is the better model. But when I was
younger, I was a night owl.
• I would sleep until noon sometimes, and then
pursue whatever it was that I was doing,
whether I was a student, or later on in my
career, I’ve always...either taught for a living
or been self-employed. So I had that flexibility.
But now, as I’ve gotten older, it seems that I
do prefer getting up at 6 or 7 o’clock in the
morning, and having a full day, as opposed to
living a more youthful lifestyle. I think this is a
very age-relevant question.

Oh, I’m definitely somebody who gets up in the morning.
I’d beat my alarm clock up every day at 2:15 so that I can
be at work by 3:30. I touch people’s lives. I affect people’s
lives. And I think that more people would start their day
earlier if they realize that what they do in life involves
another human being
; that you are a messenger – you take it from this
person, through you, to that person. And when you
see the entire circle coming together as one, you
start giving value to everyday life. If you’re gonna
sleep in, you’re missing out on a lot of fun things.
That could affect other human beings.

the day’s work. Others prefer to get up later in the day and
work until late at night. Which do you prefer?
• Well, for me, I work early in the morning, and
late at night. Depends on the job. I have two
jobs – and you know what? I like both of those
things for different reasons. When I work late
at night, there’s a...excitement or atmosphere
that I really like. But at the same time, I’d be
honest with you, I’m playing a guitar in a bar.
I’m hanging out with people who I don’t get to
see except in that circumstance.
• So I really enjoy that. One thing that’s killer
about working late, though, is having to get up
the next day. That being said, the early in the
morning thing – I like as well. I work early in
the morning doing this kind of thing: talking
on a microphone and answering questions
and reading scripts and that kind of stuff...
• in the morning, and there’s a quietness,
there’s a stillness...and I really enjoy the peace
of early morning work, because I do this work
alone, and I can sit and have a cup of coffee
and relax, and just kind of ease into the day.
There’s something really enjoyable about that,
too. So those are the reasons why I like both. I
like working late at night, and I like working
early in the day. Sometimes I prefer not to do
either, but I like them both.

• Boy, for years, I had to get up at 5:30 every
morning to be to work by 7, and it just – by
the time Friday come around, that alarm went
off at 5:30 in the morning, you were really
tired. And now, I have a job where I can get up
later in the day, so I definitely, definitely prefer
being able to stay up later at night and get up
later in the day and start work.
9 - Some people prefer to get up early in the morning and start
the day’s work. Others prefer to get up later in the day and
work until late at night. Which do you prefer?
• Generally, I like to get up early and get started.
Nothing’s better than getting a big, delicious
cup of coffee and getting out in the sunlight or
just out in the daylight and getting a move on.
I hate wasting time and I hate wasting the
daytime, especially. But if I have a really, really
difficult project, or maybe a paper to write, or
something that I have to do all by myself, I
think I like working at night a lot better
• It’s quiet, the house is still, and I can really
concentrate all by myself. And then I may work
until 3, 4, or maybe even 5 in the morning.
And then of course, I’d sleep a lot later in the
morning. So I guess it depends on what kind
of a project I’m doing. For the most part,
though, I think I like to get up early.

• Some people prefer to get up early in the
morning and start the day’s work. Others
prefer to get up later in the day and work until
late at night. Which do you prefer? Personally,
I prefer to work later in the day just because
that’s where I get my most creativity from and
that’s where I have the most time.
• I’d rather sleep in a little bit later, mainly
because I do stay up later at night to get these
things done, plus, with the things that I need
to accomplish, I have to do later at night, like
voice acting, you know, when there’s really no
one here at night, so I do that in the evening.
That’s just who I am.

• I am more of a ‘get up early, start the work
early and get it over with’...I would rather
have free time in the afternoon, in the
evening, to spend with my family and to do
things that I enjoy, and hobbies, and so forth.
I’m not a morning person per se, but I would
rather get up and get the day started; in that
way, I can get to the more enjoyable things
later on in the day and enjoy the evening.
9 - Some people prefer to get up early in the morning and start
the day’s work. Others prefer to get up later in the day and
work until late at night. Which do you prefer?
• I prefer to get up early in the morning and
start the day’s work versus waiting to start
later in the day. I feel it is more natural and
consistent with each day itself. The day starts
at sunrise, and therefore, this is when I like to
start my daily activities. I get more done in the
morning and I’m not that much of an
afternoon person so I’m not very productive
or not as productive in the afternoon.
• So I like it when the morning in effect is longer because
I’ve started earlier. I can get more done and I’m more
effective and efficient and energetic, and because of
that, I feel better about myself. So, getting started later
in the day leaves me feeling behind and lethargic and I
worry too much about the hours I missed that I could
have put to constructive use so that by the time I get
started, say if I got started at 9 or 10 o’clock, versus 6
or 7 o’clock, I just feel very behind and I’m in catch-up
mode and I feel less productive and I feel like I’ve
wasted more time. So it’s much more efficient and
effective for me to get up and get going very early.
9 - Some people prefer to get up early in the morning and start
the day’s work. Others prefer to get up later in the day and
work until late at night. Which do you prefer?
• I am definitely a morning person. I like to get
up early, workout in the morning, start my day
early, and then I usually go to bed pretty early.
In college, I think everyone tends to be a night
owl because you’re up late doing work and
you sleep in, that’s just your body’s need, but
after college I’ve definitely turned into a
morning person. I don’t mind getting up early
in the morning and I really think that that’s
what I’m all about.
