Example: She had a broken heart. Why is this a metaphor? Simile- A comparison between two objects, using LIKE or AS. Example: TJ Oshie is like a rock. Why is this a smile? Alliteration- Repetition of the same sound at the begging. Example: Sally sells seashells by the sea shore. Why is this alliteration? Try saying it fast! Onamonapia- When a word sounds like the word it describes. Example: What sound does a cat make? MEOW. Why is this an onamonapia? Personification – Human qualities that are describing an object or idea. Example: The puck ran across the ice. How is this personification? Hyperbole- An exaggeration that is not meant to be taken seriously. Example: I called you like a million times last night! What is the hyperbole in the sentence?
