Now… What is Figurative Language
Metaphor- A direct comparison between two objects. Example: She had a broken
heart. Why is this a metaphor?
Simile- A comparison between two objects, using LIKE or AS. Example: TJ Oshie is like a
rock. Why is this a smile?
Alliteration- Repetition of the same sound at the begging. Example: Sally sells seashells
by the sea shore. Why is this alliteration? Try saying it fast!
Onamonapia- When a word sounds like the word it describes. Example: What sound
does a cat make? MEOW. Why is this an onamonapia?
Personification – Human qualities that are describing an object or idea. Example: The
puck ran across the ice. How is this personification?
Hyperbole- An exaggeration that is not meant to be taken seriously. Example: I called
you like a million times last night! What is the hyperbole in the sentence?

Now that you’ve had definitions, videos, games
and lyric practice… Lets try a practice!
1. Get into a group of 6.
2. Pick one of the 6 figurative languages (metaphor, simile, alliteration,
personification, hyperbole, onamonapia).
3. Now using one of these figurative languages what can your group come up
with to describe the WHOLE group. Also, give the meaning!
