Should we keep God’s Grace to ourselves 1: 1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil[a] has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. What can we learn from Jonah • You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips. Someone should have told Jonah. Even after he went through being in the belly of a great fish, Jonah still did not get it!! • We are familiar with 1:1-3 when the word of the Lord came to Jonah telling him to go to Nineveh; however, he did not obey and was swallowed by a great fish. • When he was on land again we read “Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time”(3:1). Now again the word of the Lord came to Jonah telling him to go to Nineveh, but this time Jonah obeyed and went (3:3). • Scripture says that Nineveh was a very important city. A visit required three days. On the first day Jonah started into the city (3:4) & on the first day Jonah began to preach. The Message讯息 • For those who love short, sweet, simple sermons, Jonah certainly delivered it!!!! “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned!” (3:4). That’s it. He gets straight to the matter对于那些喜欢短的,甜密的,简单的讲道,约拿肯定做得到!!!! • Why did Jonah not want Nineveh to be spared? • Jonah walked into the heart of Nineveh and said that God’s going to zap you. • So, Jonah was all excited about going into the heart of the enemy and saying, “God’s going to get you!” • Jonah walked into Nineveh hoping that God was going to destroy the city. But what ultimately happened was that Nineveh changed. • Notice what happened after Jonah’s wonderful short sermon was given to the people of Nineveh. “The Ninevites believed God” “尼尼微人回转相信上帝” • They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. • When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust” (3:5-6). There is an interesting word used here. The king “arose.” • In chapter 1, God told Jonah to arise. • Later, in the hull of the ship the captain told Jonah to arise. God Desired Jonah to show Grace上帝希望约拿展现恩典 • It was the pagan king who heard the word of the Lord, and without prompting, stood up; he arose from his throne. It is an act of seriousness. • By taking off his royal robes, he demonstrated an act of submission. • In covering himself with sackcloth, he asked for repentance. • Then he sat in the dust, symbolizing hopelessness. • This is the attitude God wanted to see from the heart of Jonah, but He did not. • Instead, the King of Assyria and his nobles a decree. The Decree下命令 • “Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish” 他 又 使 人 遍 告 尼 尼 微 通 城 , 说 : 王 和大臣有令,人不可尝甚么,牲畜、牛羊不可吃草,也不可 喝 水 。 (3:7-9). • Notice the Lord’s response. “When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened” • 注意上帝的回应。 (3:10). Our Response to God我们对上帝的回应 • In humility, not in arrogance and pride. • “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore under God’s mighty hand that He may lift you up in due time” 你 们 年 幼 的 , 也 要 顺 服 年 长 的 。 (1 Pet. • Jonah was filled with arrogance and pride because he hated the Ninevites. • It was the pagan king who responded in humility. • We must respond to God in humility, not in arrogance and pride. • God has saved us by his grace; not by anything we have done (Eph. • Do not use that to boast or build up yourself, but rather use it to build Jesus up. What God can do with Obedience上帝如何帮助顺服的人 • “He (God) had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened, but Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry” (3:10b4:1a). Suddenly, our hero is not the hero. Yes, after he was vomited out of the fish, Jonah went and preached to Nineveh – reluctantly. • A reluctant obedience is not an obedience of the heart • The prophet of God could receive the grace of God but could pass it on to others. • There is no greater tragedy than when the church, the very people who have received God’s mercy and blessing, cannot extend the same to others. A Mature Life一个成熟的生命 • Extends grace to and rejoices in the maturity of others. 与人分享上帝的恩典, 和欢喜别人的成长 • Are you a Jonah? Ready to see people destroyed or are you as God wants us to be. Full of love and compassion? • Remember it is not what you say that is so important but rather what you do. • It is the fruit you display that determines how people view you. • And it is certain that the Lord wants us to display our fruit because He says that it is by their (Christians) fruit you will know them.
