Bellringers Week of 11/18-11/22 A VERB is a word that expresses action, existence or occurrence. Make your bellringers into a T-Chart labeling one side as “Action” and one side as “Linking”. Shows ACTION VERBS • Action verbs will show action such a “run”, “hop”, “draw” or “carry”. • It answers the question “what is the subject doing?”. • These verbs can change tense by adding the suffix –ing (present tense); -ed (past tense) or adding a linking verb to show future tense (example: will run) Shows EXISTENCE VERBS Be Did Am May Is Can Are Must Was Might Were Would Been Could Has Should Have Shall Had Will Do Being Does 11/18/13 Bellringer • Analyze the paragraph below and identify the verbs. In 1849, gold was discovered in California, which at the time has 14,000 people. Dreams of striking it rich caused thousands to head west. Few found gold. Most struggled to survive. In 1855, the Gold Rush was over. Many moved on in search of new gold fields. But, by that time, California had almost half a million people. Mutts are often free, where purebreds can cost thousands. Also, mutts might not be as handsome as purebreds, but they’re less likely to be nervous or snappy, and best of all, a mutt doesn’t have a million copies of itself running around. They live in the desert, where they stay in burrows during the day and hunt at night. Jerboas get their liquids from their food, so they never drink water.
