ISSN changes ISSN update from CONSER meeting at ALA (January 2013) / Regina Reynolds 1) Issuing ISSNs to new journals • ISSN centers are deferring assignment of an ISSN until the first issue is published • Why: Predatory open access publishers. In November, one of the publishers applied for 300 ISSNs for generic titles that sound like titles already being published; some will never be published • See Beall’s List of Predatory Publishers 2013: http://scholarlyoa.com/2012/12/06/bealls-list-of-predatorypublishers-2013/ ISSN changes 2) New policy: ISSNs are being assigned to digital reproductions • E.g., JSTOR titles • Exception: if there is an ISSN for a born digital copy already (a non-reproduction), that ISSN will apply to the reproduction, too • The same ISSN will apply to a version for a mobile device or ebook reader • The U.S. Center will assign ISSNs for all the serials in the HathiTrust • Will talk to CRL about digital newspapers • Journals may have an icon that indicates they are ISSN compliant 18. schema.org • Launched in 2011 by Google, Bing, Yahoo! • Vocabulary for coding web documents. This allows the metadata to be used in browser searches, etc. • Developing specific extensions for different industries, including libraries • OCLC is adding schema.org descriptive markup to WorldCat.org pages • Advantage: linked bibliographic data Examples of elements found in coded information in the source code for a WorldCat.org record • http://schema.org/Place • http://schema.org/Person 19. Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms: Project updates • Moving images • The OLAC Cataloging Policy Committee’s Best Practices document can be found here: http://olacinc.org/drupal/capc_files/LCGFTbestpractices.pdf • Spoken-word recorded sound • Cartography • Law 59 LCGFT: Project updates • Music • Approximately 750 terms have been agreed on between the Library of Congress and the Music Library Association as of February 2013 • The list of terms can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcmlalist.pdf • Religion • The Library of Congress is working with the American Theological Library Association on this project • This project is set to be completed by the end of the year, if not sooner • Literature • Approximately 800 terms have been gathered • Non-Disciplinary Terms • Still in beginning phases • Currently gathering terms from form subdivisions 60 LCGFT/LCSH: Globes • The LCGFT Globes has been expanded to permit usage for any astronomical body and the LCGFT Lunar Globes has been cancelled. • Furthermore, the LCSH form heading, –Globes has been cancelled in favor of the form subdivision –Maps. The fact that a work is a spherical representation will be brought out by the LCGFT Globes • LCSH term Earth is now Earth (Planet) • The announcement from LC can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genre_form_globes_final.pdf 61 Medium of performance (LCMPT) • The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library Association, has begun developing a thesaurus for the medium of performance of musical works – Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT) • Also intended to be used as a source vocabulary for RDA’s “medium of performance” element (MARC field 382). • Designed to be used independently of cataloging code or communications format • Approximately 850 terms have been agreed on by the Library of Congress and Music Library Association as of February 2013 • The working list of terms and a description of the project can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/medprf_lcmla.pdf 20. LCSH: Law and legislation • In April 2013, the LC Policy and Standards Division (PSD) made the announcement that the subdivision –Law and legislation will be authorized to use under LCSH headings for crimes • PSD has undertaken a project to establish headings for crimes with the subdivision –Law and legislation as well as revise existing headings and bibliographic records as necessary. The Subject Headings Manual instruction sheet H 1705 has also been revised to reflect this change • The announcement can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/crime-law-and-legislation.pdf LCSH: Subject category codes • Library of Congress has undertaken an experiment to add subject category codes (072) to subject authority records, which will complement the subdivision usage codes (073) in subdivision authority records. There are three expected benefits to adding this information: 1. 2. 3. The usability of LCSH on the Semantic Web will be enhanced It will allow ILSs and resource discovery platforms to assist catalogers in determining appropriate subdivisions for subject headings It will improve automatic heading string creation and validation • The experiment is currently in progress. As of December 2012, approximately 200 records have been edited 64 LCSH: Subject category codes For more information, see the original announcement here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/c pso/field_072_announceme nt.pdf 21. LCSH: RDA revisions • The Library of Congress has finished the revisions to LCSH that were prompted by RDA Phase 2 • • • • • • Expansion of abbreviations Modification of Bible headings Replacement of ‘violoncello’ with ‘cello’ Replacement of ‘Koran’ with ‘Qur’an’ Replacement of $t Selections with $t Works. $k Selections Modification of date subfields (e.g. born/died replaced by hyphens, abbreviations spelled out) • The list of revised LCSH can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/subjects-RDA-changes.html 66 LCSH/LCC: RDA revisions • The Policy and Standards Division (PSD) of the Library of Congress is reviewing both the Subject Headings Manual and Classification and Shelflisting Manual in light of RDA. • Most revisions will be superficial (such as replacing “AACR2” with “RDA”), others will be more substantial • There is currently no timeline for this project, but it is considered relatively urgent • See product update pages here: http://www.loc.gov/cds/products/freeDloads.php (Classification and Shelflist Manual updates are under LC Classification – Additions and Changes) 22. LCC: Subclass KIA-KIX • Class KIA-KIX for the Law of the Indigenous Peoples in the Americas was added to the LC Law Classification in 2012. • The purpose of the new schedule was “to provide for the first time a geographical and substantive arrangement for Indigenous People in the Americas, their organization, and the unique and complex body of legal sources concerning these peoples.” • A new guide and bibliography for the classification schedule is now available in draft stage and can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/kia_intro.html 68 23.
