Bib 264: Production, publication, distribution,
manufacture, and copyright notice
Question on RDA list (paraphrased): Guidelines indicate that if publication
information is not identified, add distribution; if distribution information is not
identified, add manufacturer. If none are known, are all three fields required?
• 264 1 [Place of publication not identified] : $b [publisher not identified],
$c [not before 1992]
• 264 2 [Place of distribution not identified] : $b [distributor not identified]
• 264 3 [Place of manufacture not identified] : $c [manufacturer not
identified]
Answer from LChelp4rda (paraphrased):
• … Implicit in the definition of ‘Core’ is the 1.3 wording: “elements that are
applicable and readily ascertainable.”
• Not all resources give information about a distributor or manufacturer. If
these statements aren’t applicable to the resource, they aren’t core. We
don’t have to assume an unknown distributor or manufacturer.
• This is sufficient, if no distribution or manufacturer info is available:
• 264 1 [Place of publication not identified] : $b [publisher not
identified], $c [not before 1992]

accepted as RDA
• Accept AACR2 form without a date, even if the date is now known
• Accept AACR2 form with or without a fuller form in $q as an RDA
acceptable form

Changes to LC/NACO authority

• Phase 1: mark all records that are or are likely to be
incompatible with RDA and which need manual review (JulyAugust 2012)
• 436,943 records updated
• 667: THIS 1XX FIELD CANNOT BE USED UNDER RDA UNTIL THIS
RECORD HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND/OR UPDATED

17. ISSN changes
ISSN update from CONSER meeting at ALA (January 2013) /
Regina Reynolds
1) Issuing ISSNs to new journals
• ISSN centers are deferring assignment of an ISSN until
the first issue is published
• Why: Predatory open access publishers. In November,
one of the publishers applied for 300 ISSNs for generic
titles that sound like titles already being published;
some will never be published
• See Beall’s List of Predatory Publishers 2013:
http://scholarlyoa.com/2012/12/06/bealls-list-of-predatorypublishers-2013/
ISSN changes
2) New policy: ISSNs are being assigned to digital reproductions
• E.g., JSTOR titles
• Exception: if there is an ISSN for a born digital copy already (a
non-reproduction), that ISSN will apply to the reproduction, too
• The same ISSN will apply to a version for a mobile device or ebook reader
• The U.S. Center will assign ISSNs for all the serials in the
HathiTrust
• Will talk to CRL about digital newspapers
• Journals may have an icon that indicates they are ISSN compliant
18. schema.org
• Launched in 2011 by Google, Bing, Yahoo!
• Vocabulary for coding web documents. This allows the metadata
to be used in browser searches, etc.
• Developing specific extensions for different industries,
including libraries
• OCLC is adding schema.org descriptive markup to
WorldCat.org pages
• Advantage: linked bibliographic data

Medium of performance (LCMPT)
• The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library
Association, has begun developing a thesaurus for the medium of
performance of musical works – Library of Congress Medium of
Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT)
• Also intended to be used as a source vocabulary for RDA’s “medium
of performance” element (MARC field 382).
• Designed to be used independently of cataloging code or
communications format
• Approximately 850 terms have been agreed on by the Library of
Congress and Music Library Association as of February 2013
• The working list of terms and a description of the project can be
found here: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/medprf_lcmla.pdf
20. LCSH: Law and legislation
• In April 2013, the LC Policy and Standards Division (PSD) made
the announcement that the subdivision –Law and legislation
will be authorized to use under LCSH headings for crimes
• PSD has undertaken a project to establish headings for crimes
with the subdivision –Law and legislation as well as revise
existing headings and bibliographic records as necessary. The
Subject Headings Manual instruction sheet H 1705 has also
been revised to reflect this change
• The announcement can be found here:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/crime-law-and-legislation.pdf
LCSH: Subject category codes
• Library of Congress has undertaken an experiment to add
subject category codes (072) to subject authority records,
which will complement the subdivision usage codes (073) in
subdivision authority records. There are three expected
benefits to adding this information:
1.
2.
3.
The usability of LCSH on the Semantic Web will be enhanced
It will allow ILSs and resource discovery platforms to assist
catalogers in determining appropriate subdivisions for subject
headings
It will improve automatic heading string creation and
validation
• The experiment is currently in progress. As of December
2012, approximately 200 records have been edited

ALA Midwinter Meeting
ALA Heads of Cataloging
Interest Group (January 28, 2013)
Topic: Assessment
• Assessment in practice / Rebecca Mugridge
• Quantitative Assessment / Casey Cheney (Backstage Library
Works)
Assessment in practice / Rebecca Mugridge
• The cataloging we do are pieces of scholarship; we create
databases that contribute to the scholarly record; we have
impact outside our libraries
• How can we share the value and impact of what we do?
• Six assessment activities at Penn State
• Workflow analysis and assessment with an outside facilitator
• CQI Improvement Team
• Customer service survey
• Interviews or focus groups
• Benchmarking
• 360 degree review
Quantitative Assessment / Casey Chaney
• Output
• Before can measure output, need goals
• Records per hour that one cataloger can process
• Before projects, project manager sets goals based on a sample,
comparison with similar projects, and procedures
• Use a time-card system
• Cataloger’s must meet 80% of project average
• Keeps several spreadsheets with data
• Quality
•
•
•
•
•
Desire high quality records
Identify minor errors and major errors
Major: e.g., hinders access, wrong record
Minor: e.g., spacing errors in non-searchable fields
Work passes or fails for the day
• Other reports look at production and quality in different ways:
compare number of hours and measures
