REFERENCE TO OTHER MANUALS
The ESL should have sent you the guide ‘General information’ about your studies in Rotterdam. This
guide contains a lot of useful and practical information, including information about the campus, the
faculty, student services, how to open a bank account, hospitals, etc.
If you have not received this guide you should contact the International Office of the ESL, and they
will be able to send it to you.
The university also has a handbook for new students, which
http://www.eur.nl/english/essc/welcome/handbook_for_new_students/
you
can
find
at
In this JFR manual we will try to complement all the practical information with insights from a
student point of view. For any other information we would like to refer you to the guides from the
ESL and the university.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE JFR
The Juridische Faculteitsvereniging Rotterdam (JFR), which stands for Law Faculty Association
Rotterdam, is thé association for the students of the Erasmus School of Law. With over 3000
members, the JFR is one of the biggest and most professional law faculty associations in the
Netherlands and one of the biggest and oldest associations at the Erasmus University.
The association organizes several formal and informal activities for its members, all of which have
some judicial relevance. Examples are movie nights, excursion, and study trips. The goal is to close
the gap between the theories taught in class and the way law is practiced in the ‘real world’.
Besides the formal activities, there is a lot of time for socializing. All members can enjoy free
consumptions at the monthly social drink.
1.1.
Explanation of the Structure
A large study association of course needs a board! Currently, JFR already has its 51st board. The
board consists of a president, a vice-president & secretary, a treasurer, an internal relations officer, a
commercial officer, a media officer and an education officer.
Various committees, several ‘disputen’, and a couple of ‘onderverenigingen’ assist the board. For
more information see the next section.
1.2.
Committees, ‘disputen’ and ‘onderverenigingen'
1.2.1. Committees
The JFR organizes several formal and informal activities for its members, all of which have some
judicial relevance. Committees, members of which are called active members, organize all of these
activities. These committees are essential for the JFR and make all of this possible. For example the
International Committee creates activities for the international students and the Activities
Committee organizes more formal activities, like visits to law firms and courts.
Current JFR Committees:
- Academic Committee
- Activities Committee
- Almanac Committee
- Alumni Committee
- Editorial Committee
- Events Committee
- First year Committee
- International Committee
- Internet editorial Committee
- Lustrum Committee
- Marketing Committee
- Meesterweek Committee
- Travel Committee
- The Right Movie Night Committee
- BAC
- KasCO

1.2.2. Disputen’ and ‘onderverenigingen’
Besides committees, the JFR also has ‘disputen’. These are sub-associations, all of which focus on a
specific area of law. The Wichmann Dispuut is an example of this; they organize activities related to
criminal law. The main focuses of these sub-associations are the bachelor 3 and master students. It is
however possible for bachelor 1 and 2 students to attend their activities as well. When you are a
member of the JFR, you can enjoy the first membership of one of these sub-associations as well.
‘Onderverenigingen’ are also sub-associations from the JFR. Currently, there are two
‘onderverenigingen’, called CIA and In Duplo. CIA is an ‘ondervereniging’ which focuses on the
Criminology students and In Duplo organizes activities for the students who follow the mr.drs.
program.
Current ‘Disputen’:
- Arbeidsrechtelijk Dispuut
- DJ. Veegens
- Ius Mobile
- Ondernemingsrechtelijk Dispuut
- Probus
- Strafrechtelijk Dispuut Wichmann
- Trade and Transport Law Association
- Rotterdams Gezondheidsrecht Dispuut
Current ‘Onderverenigingen’:
- Criminologie in Actie (CIA)
- In Duplo
1.3.
The Shop
In the V-building the JFR has its headquarter, which is called ‘the Shop’ (VB-24). In the past, it was
actually possible to buy law related stuff here. The name was never changed, but ‘the Shop’ isn’t a
real shop anymore. You can always visit the Shop for free coffee, a chat, and for any questions you
might have about the JFR, its activities, and a membership!
Opening hours:
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Sat./Sunday

09:00-18:00

11:00-17:00
Closed
** Monday from 13:00 until 15:00 and Wednesday from 12:00 until 14:00 the shop is closed, since
there are board meetings planned at these hours.
1.4.
How to become a member?
Becoming a member of the JFR is really easy and you can really benefit from being one. For example,
you can get a 10% discount on several study books. Also, the JFR organizes monthly drinks where all
members get a drink for free. For more info, see ‘Social Drinks’.

1.4.1. Becoming a member:
If you want to become a JFR member, you need to fill out a registration form, which you will find on
the JFR website and attached to this manual. Membership will only cost you €18,00 a year. Your
membership will continue until you unsubscribe.
1.4.2. Cancelling membership:
If you would like to cancel your membership, you need to unsubscribe by sending an email to
secretaris@jfr.nl. Mention your name, student number and reason of cancelling in the e-mail. If the
e-mail has been received in good order, you will receive a confirmation. Make sure to cancel your
membership before the first of august. For example, cancelling for 2014-2015, is possible until the
first of august 2014. The same applies for unsubscribe for a ‘dispuut’.
1.5.
How to become a member of a ‘dispuut’?
If you would like to register as a member of a ‘dispuut’ you can indicate this on the register form that
you have to fill in to become a JFR member. Membership is free if it is your first ‘dispuut’
membership. If you would like to become a member of another ‘dispuut’ as well, it will cost you
€9,00 extra. Keep in mind that only the Trade and Transport Law Association is fully in English. The
other ‘disputen’ and ‘onderverenigingen’ cater mainly for Dutch students.
To become a member of an ‘ondervereniging’, you need to contact these ‘onderverenigingen’. For
CIA, send an e-mail to info@svcia.nl. For In Duplo, go to www.induplo.nl, click on ‘verenigingen’ > ‘lid
worden’ and download the register form.
1.6.
How to become an active member?
If you are interested in becoming an active JFR member, check out the JFR Facebook page, your email and Sin-online, because the vacancies will be announced there. In the vacancy is explained how
to apply. Usually you need to reply with your CV and a short motivation before a deadline. After the
deadline, some people will get an invitation for an interview and based on those interviews the new
active members will be selected.
1.7.
How to stay updated: Facebook and website
To stay updated check out the JFR website, the JFR Facebook page and the Facebook page especially

EXPERIENCE OF AN INTERNATIONAL JFR MEMBER
Shuo Ma is one of the current members of the International Committee. She is from China, but this is
her second year in Rotterdam already. She was one of the very first international members of the
JFR, but she is having a great time. We would love to share her experience here!
“It is very excited to be an active member of JFR as an international student. Beyond my previous
comprehension, there are in fact many activities in English, for instance, the Movie Night and social
drinks. Both formal and informal social events are included. It makes things easier for me to attend
these activities without feeling isolated. Furthermore, the international committee that is also the
first international committee in JFR history will help us with organizing more activities on backstage
in 2014. Because we as international students could propose what we want to do beforehand, I
cannot wait till the moment when new activities are carried out!”

If you want, you can write a little description or summary of the book under ‘Toelichting op conditie’.
You also have to fill out how many of these books you are selling (they have to be exactly the same),
under ‘Aantal’.
The last, but most important thing you need to fill out is the price that you are charging (this price
includes the costs for transport) for your book. Www.bol.com is charging €0,99 + 15% from your
price, since the website is the mediator.
For example, if you charge €20,00, www.bol.com will receive €3,99 if you sell the book. This is the
agency fee, and is called ‘bemiddelingskosten’ in Dutch. Since you have to send the book in a
package to the buyer, www.bol.com will provide €2,95 for that. This is called the ‘pakketbijdrage’ in
Dutch. In the end, that will leave you with €18,96.
Now you can click on ‘Zet artikel te koop’, and your book will be up for sale!

Getting around Holland: The OV-chipcard
(At https://www.ov-chipkaart.nl/ you can find all the information. You can switch to English in the
upper corner.)
From 2009, all public transportation in the Netherlands should be using an electronic stored-value
card called the OV-chipkaart. This is a kind of credit card used to pay for bus, tram, train and metro.
You can buy it at stations, kiosks and many supermarkets. Three main types of OV-chipkaart are
available: reloadable "personal" cards that can be used only by their pictured owner; reloadable
"anonymous" cards that can be used by anyone; and nonreloadable "throwaway" cards. Throwaway
cards, which are likely to be the card of choice for short-term visitors, are being sold at different
prices. In the Rotterdam Tram, these cards will cost you 3 euro’s, and can be used for several hours.
Electronic readers on Metro and train station platforms and on board trams and buses deduct the
correct fare; just hold your card up against the reader at both the start and the end of the ride.
1.6.1. Getting started
-
Buy an anonymous or personal OV chip card
The card costs €7.50 and is valid for a maximum of five years
You cannot add credit with your credit card
The minimum card balance for railway travel is €20!
1.6.2. Charging credit to your OV chip card
An OV chip card costs €7.50 but does not contain any initial travel credit. You can add credit at one of
the service desks or machines at many stations. (With the personal credit card it is possible to load
your card automatically) Please note that the payment options vary but you can never pay by credit
card. Once you have added credit, you can use the OV chip card to travel by bus, tram and metro. It
is not yet suitable for use on the train however!
1.6.3. Using an OV chip card for railway travel
If you want to use your OV chip card to pay for railway travel (with NS), you must first activate it at a
‘NS ticket machine’. In addition there must be at least €20 worth of travel credit on your card before
you can travel by train (this does not apply for bus, tram or metro). If you did not activate your OV
chip card for railway travel, you can also buy a ticket at one of the 'NS ticket machines' or the ‘NS
Tickets & Service Desks’ at the bigger stations. Please note that tickets cost €0.50 more at the 'NS
Tickets & Service Desk'!
1.6.4. Credit card payment not always possible
If you want to buy a train ticket at one of the NS ticket machines, the payment methods are usually
restricted to cash or PIN (debit card). You cannot use your credit card. Only the ticket machines at
Schiphol Airport Station and Amsterdam Central Station accept credit cards.
1.6.5. Checking in and out
When getting on a bus, tram or train, hold the OV chip card in front of the clearly marked window on
the check-in machine. The machine will confirm that you are checked in with a green light and audio
signal (beep). Checking out works the same way; the machine tells you the cost of the ride and how
much credit you have left. Remember to check out or the meter will keep running!

1.6.6. Validity of card and balance
Your anonymous OV chip card has a maximum validity of five years. In most cases the expiry date is
printed on the card. You can therefore save your OV chip card for future use when you visit Holland
again. The balance also remains valid. Please note that the price of the card itself (€7.50) is never
refunded!
If you want to receive a refund for the credit balance, you can go to the service desk of one of the
public transport companies at one of the stations (if the balance is lower than €30). You will pay an
administration fee of €2.50. If you want to terminate the card, the public transport desk can give you
a form. Fill out the form and send it to the address on the form together with the card.
Please note that you cannot block an anonymous OV chip card in case of loss or theft so do not put
too much credit to the card!
Anonymous OV chip cards can be bought at:
-
Vending machines on stations
Several tobacco shops (such as Primera)
Several supermarkets
Some Bruna shops
Public transport service desks
Personal OV chip cards can be bought at:
Online at www.ov-chipkaart.nl (switch to English)
1.6.7. Train discounts (only with a personal OV chip card):
