What is College Probation and How Does It Affect Me?
Based upon “Back on Track” by J. Gasper-Hulvat and S. O’Brien, Temple University
Goal: This is a tool for Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) students that have
been placed on college probation. We will examine the various College and
University probation and drop policies and assist you in identifying campus
resources that may help you as you work toward the completion of your degree
requirements.
What is College Probation?
When an HSS student earns a semester grade point average (gpa) that is lower than a
2.00, the student is placed on college probation regardless of their LSU and cumulative
gpas.
An HSS student may be placed on college probation at the end of a fall or spring
semester only. Fall and spring semesters are defined as “regular” semesters.
A student that earns below a 2.00 semester gpa for two consecutive regular semesters
will be dropped from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences for at least one
regular semester regardless of their LSU and cumulative gpas.
How is College Probation different from University Scholastic Warning, University
Scholastic Probation, and University Scholastic Drop?
The University’s Scholastic Warning, Scholastic Probation, and Scholastic Drop
policies are based upon a student’s LSU and/ or cumulative gpas.
What is University Scholastic Warning?
As defined in the LSU General Catalog, “students will be placed on University
Scholastic Warning if their gpas are one to nine quality points below a 2.00 on all work
attempted or on all work attempted in the LSU System…Students will remain on
University Scholastic Warning until they bring their gpas up to 2.00 or are placed on
University Scholastic Probation.”
A student may be placed on University Scholastic Warning at the end of any
semester, term, or intersession.
What is University Scholastic Probation?
As defined in the LSU General Catalog, “students will be placed on University
Scholastic Probation if their gpas are 10 or more quality points below a 2.00 on
all work attempted or on all work attempted in the LSU System. Students will
remain on University Scholastic Probation until they have cumulative averages
of 2.00 or higher on all college work attempted and on all work attempted in the
LSU System.”
A student may only be placed on University Scholastic Probation at the end of a fall
or spring semester.
What is University Scholastic Drop?
As defined in the LSU General Catalog, “students on University Scholastic Probation
will be dropped from the University at the end of any fall or spring semester if their
semester average is less than 2.00 on either all work attempted or on all work
attempted in the LSU System. Students in University Scholastic Drop may not apply
toward LSU degree requirements credit earned at any institution, including LSU
distance program courses, during the period of their ineligibility to enroll at LSU.”

As previously noted, you were placed on college probation because of your
semester gpa. If your semester gpa is below a 2.00 in the next regular
semester in which you are enrolled at LSU, you will be dropped from the
College of Humanities & Social Sciences.
Now that I have been placed on college probation, what do I do?
To be removed from college probation, a student must:

Earn a 2.00 or better semester gpa;

Correct course deficiencies;
and

Make satisfactory progress in their declared degree program.
Also, we strongly urge you to make an appointment with a counselor in our
office to discuss your academic situation. Our goal is for you to be academically
successful. Our college probation program was implemented to alert students to
the potential long-term negative effects that their gpa may have on their
academic situation. We believe that being on college probation will allow you the
opportunity to assess your academic habits and re-evaluate what you need to
do to be successful in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences.
After being dropped from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, you must do
the following to gain re-entry:
1) You must earn a 2.00 on your fall or spring semester gpa while enrolled in
another academic college on campus during your college drop period.
2) You must meet the HSS admission requirements in place at the time of your reentry.
What are the current HSS admission requirements?
1. You must complete ENGL 1001 with a grade of “C” or higher.
2. You must complete at least three hours of General Education Analytical Reasoning
coursework.
3. You must have earned at least 24 credit hours.
4. You must have a minimum of 2.00 on both your LSU and cumulative gpas for
all majors with the exception of Communication Sciences & Disorders,
Psychology, and all Secondary Education concentrations.
5. Students pursuing a major in Communication Sciences & Disorders, Psychology,
or a Secondary Education concentration must have a 2.50 on both their LSU and
cumulative gpas.
Failure to meet these requirements will result in a delay in your being re-admitted to
the College of Humanities & Social Sciences.
