Dr. Steve Sheng-Fa Yu Our Responsibilities We help some aspects of student’s life including General student welfare and Academic works (courses/lab rotations) etc. We act as advisors for first year students until they choose their thesis advisors (monthly meetings between committee members and the first year students are mandatory) Deals with student-advisor relationship if there is a problem. Talks with failed students to understand the causes and provide possible remedies. Choosing and changing the thesis advisor … Students can rotate two labs before choosing their advisors at the end of the first academic year. Both the advisor and the student need to sign on the “Application Form for Designating a Thesis Advisor” Later if changing the advisor, both the advisor and the student need to sign on the “Application Form for Changing Thesis Advisor” WHO ARE WE?? Degree (including 24 credits for core course)-before the end of 3rd year Qualifying Examination Regulations Dr. Tai-Huang Huang For students in CB track Cumulative Exam: Students can start to take the Cumulative Written Exams after enrolment, chosen from five major subjects: Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Chemical Biology provided by NTU-Chem. Each time a student can choose 1 or 2 subjects to take. Grade is rated in three levels: two points for grade A, one point for grade B, and no point for grade C. Each student has to obtain at least two points by the end of the first year, and obtain 7 points within four years from at least two subjects. Students who fail to meet these requirements will be disqualified, and must withdraw from the doctoral program. For students in MB track Non-thesis Oral Exam: Students, who have passed all registered courses in the first academic year, are eligible to take Non-thesis Oral Exam. Students must take first non-thesis oral exam before the first day of their third academic year. One make-up exam is allowed, but students have to retake the exam after 3 months and before 6 months of the date of the first exam by using the same topic or different topic approved by the committee. Students, who still fail in the second exam, will be disqualified from the Program. Thesis Progressive Report A student, from the third academic year onwards, must submit annually progressive report to the Committee. Ph. D. Defense Examination Eligibility: Complete Course Credits Pass Qualifying Exam Do Thesis Progress Report Reach Minimum Publication Requirements Students, who pass the exam, will be rewarded with a Ph.D. * Only one make-up examination allowed * The make-up examination must be completed before the end of the student’s seventh academic year. The minimum and maximum duration of Ph.D. study are two and seven years, respectively. Other requirements by university NTU & NTHU Department of Chemistry: A pre-oral exam required one year prior the PhD defense exam NTHU College of Life Sciences: Required to have a “PhD thesis proposal review” before the end of July, 4th academic year. NTU Institute of Biological Sciences & NTHU College of Life Sciences: Open public talk required before or on the same day as the PhD defense exam NTHU Department of Chemistry: Student with admission of a BS degree required to do the course “Colloquium” for three academic years (6 semesters), with code CHEM5700 Students required to select ”TA teaching course” in the second PhD year.
