Summer Minor Program in U.S. Public Policy Director, J. Celeste Lay (jlay@tulane.edu) Why study public policy? 5 Required Courses • POLA 3240: Public Policy – If you’ve already taken this, you don’t have to repeat it. • ECON 1050: Intro to Micro for Pub Policy – If you’ve taken ECON 1010, you are exempt and must take an additional elective during reg. sem. • POLA 4110: Policy Research Shop • 2 Electives Session 1 - May 19-May 30 • POLA 3240: Public Policy (Prof. Lay) – Class meets 3 hrs, 45 mins per day for 2 weeks – Students can take no other courses during this session. Session 2 – June 2-June 27 • ECON 1050 (if not exempt) Prof. Pereira – This class fulfills the pre-req for 3000-level ECON electives for public policy minors only. AND • 1 of the following – POLI 4010: National Security in Film (Prof. Fettweis) – ARHS 3910: Public Policy & the Arts (Prof. Porras) Session 3 – June 30-July 25 • POLA 4110: Policy Research Shop (Prof. Brox) – This course fulfills the tier-2 graduation requirement for service (or tier-1 if you haven’t done it yet). AND • 1 of the following – SOCI 2100: Drugs, Crime & Public Policy (Prof. Ostertag) – PHIL 3930: Philosophy & Public Policy (Prof. Brower) Pertinent Info • Pre-requisites for electives are waived in summer in this program. • Students must earn a 2.0 (C) cumulative average in the 5 courses in order to complete the minor. • Some assignments may need to be turned in during the fall semester (esp in POLA 4110). • Transportation can be provided for servicelearning. Tuition & Fees Note: Prices are subject to change, but not dramatically. • Tuition – approximately $2000 per course – App. Total for all 5 courses: $10,000 • Housing – approximately $38 per night – App. Total from May 18-July 26: $2660 • Reily Summer Membership – App. $90 • Meal Plans – TBD Signing Up • In January, declaration forms will be available. • Registration will be through the SLA Dean’s office (not through Gibson) and will likely begin in March or April. – Some courses are open only to declared minors, so it’s important to get the form in early.
