FOUNDATIONS FOR B.A. DEGREE*
120 semester hours of applicable college credits are required for the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degrees. A maximum of three hours of
lower-level “activities” (PE) credits may apply toward the degree. If approved, up to 30 hours of lower-level correspondence, extension or CLEP credit may
apply as lower level credit toward graduation in accordance with catalog rules.
At least 30 hours of the degree, including at least 12 hours in the major, must be completed in residence at UHCL.
At least 60 hours must be upper-level credit.
A minimum of 9 hours of lower-level and/or upper-level English composition course credits are required.
A cumulative GPA of at least 2.000 must be maintained for course work completed at UHCL, with grades of “C” or better in at least 30 hours of UHCL
classes required for graduation (does not include C-). Each degree may have additional grade requirements.
Students must remain continuously enrolled (complete at least one course in a 12 month period) for the degree plan to remain valid. Otherwise they must
meet the requirements of the catalog in effect when they return.
Students must complete the degree within seven years or meet the requirements of a later catalog. Upper-level classes older than 7 years will not count
toward the degree without school approval.

UHCL’s requirements are consistent with the 42-hour Texas core curriculum. If a student completes components of the core at one Texas institution, those courses will
substitute for UHCL’s same core components. If a student is core complete at any Texas Institution, the student is also core complete at UHCL; however, foundation
(#) courses are still required. The Core Code is used by Texas schools to identify which area of the 42-hour core curriculum a course fulfills.
** These courses may be fulfilled by approved upper-level equivalents at UHCL.

Admission to UHCL requires prior completion of six hours of English Composition with grade of “C-” or better. This must include ENGL 1301 Composition I plus
either ENGL 1302 Composition II or ENGL 2311 Technical Writing.
Graduation requires nine hours of English composition classes, which must include Technical Writing. If ENGL 1301 and 1302 are transferred, then WRIT 3135
Technical Writing is taken at UHCL and will also fulfill an upper-level elective slot in the degree plan. This is usually the best strategy, requiring the fewest total hours. If
you have already taken ENGL 2301 and 2311, consult a UHCL academic advisor before taking additional English.
Suggested courses for Speech/Communication include any SPCH class. At some community colleges, foreign languages may also fulfill state core speech
requirements if the college requires core 11 as a requirement.
For B.A. degree, MATH 1314 or higher is required. For B.S. degree MATH 2413 is required.
General Biology I and II and General Chemistry I and II should be completed before the student begins the bachelor’s program at UHCL. These are prerequisites for
most UHCL classes, and students cannot make satisfactory progress at UHCL without them.
Suggested classes for Humanities include any ENGL literature, HUMA, PHIL, RELI, or sophomore-level foreign language course – also any SPCH or HIST taken in
addition to core requirements.
Suggested classes for Visual & Performing Arts include: any ARTS, DANC, DRAM, MUSI, or MUAP course. Three semester credit hours required.
Six hours of U.S. History required; three hours may be in Texas History. Six hours of GOVT are required, three of the six hours must, by state law, include Texas
Constitutional Govt. New requirements are GOVT 2305/2306. The state still accepts GOVT 2301/2302. Two other combinations are accepted: GOVT 2301/2305;
GOVT 2301/2306. No other combinations are accepted.
Suggested classes for Social & Behavioral Science include: any ANTH, ECON, GEOG, PSYC, or SOCI course - also any GOVT, HIST, or POLS class taken in addition
to core requirements.
Suggested classes for Computer Competency include any COSC or CSCI course. Other classes may meet this requirement. Please check with an advisor on your
campus. If your school lists a class as Core 90, UHCL will accept it.
EXCESS CREDIT WARNING The Texas State Legislature limits the number of hours undergraduates can attempt in excess of the hours required for
their degree without incurring a financial penalty. A fee of $130 per semester credit hours is added to regular tuition for students who exceed the limits.
Attempted hours include all non-developmental college credits completed plus withdrawals and repeats at any Texas public institution. Undergraduates
who enrolled in a Texas public college or university between Fall 1999 and Summer 2006 are allowed 45 attempted hours in excess of those required
for their degree and undergraduates who enrolled Fall 2006 and later are allowed 30 excess attempted hours. After these limits are exceeded, the

*Faculty Advisor Approval: During the first semester at UHCL, SCE Academic Advisors create an individual degree plan for each new student called a Candidate Plan of Study or
CPS. The CPS is e-mailed to the student’s campus e-mail. It shows which classes transferred and which remain to be taken to complete the degree. It includes the name and contact
information for an assigned faculty advisor. Undergraduates meet with their assigned faculty advisor during their first semester (after receiving the plan) to select electives and
finalize the degree requirements. Electives must have the faculty advisor’s approval.

The single most important document for your successful graduation is your

We will be happy to accommodate veterans and others who need a
degree plan prior to fee payment with a generic temporary plan that is
accepted for one semester.
Upon receiving your plan, you will then print it and meet with your
faculty advisor to finalize your degree plan.
A copy of the final plan will be e-mailed to you for your signature.

Probation and Suspension - Undergraduates
Probation
Undergraduate students whose Cumulative GPA drops
below 2.00 are placed on probation.
While on probation, the semester GPA must be 2.00 or
better every semester until the cumulative GPA rises to
2.00, at which time the student is removed from probation.
Suspension
If, while on probation, a student earns a semester GPA of less than
2.00, the student is placed on suspension, cannot attend UCHL for one
semester, and must request reinstatement.
A second suspension is for one year.
A third suspension is forever.
