in het kader van 200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden
Nederland is jarig! In Maastricht vieren we 200 jaar Koninkrijk op 30 augustus. Het Nationaal Comité 200 jaar
Koninkrijk heeft Maastricht het thema internationale oriëntatie toegewezen. Maastricht is de meest Europese
stad midden in het hart van Europa. Tel daarbij op het grote aantal internationale studenten, de talrijke culturele
invloeden vanuit onze buurlanden en de ambitie van Maastricht om een internationale stad van ontmoetingen te
zijn. Op 30 augustus zal er een internationaal congres, een groot evenement op en rond het Onze Lieve
Vrouwenplein en een feestelijk avondprogramma plaatsvinden. Daarnaast geeft de ook 200 jarige Koninklijke
Landmacht een presentatie. Uiteraard staat het Preuvenemint ook in het teken van 200 jaar Koninkrijk.
Burgmeester Hoes: ‘We willen het Koninkrijk in Maastricht een internationaal cachet meegeven. In evenementen,
concerten, lezingen, colleges en debatten leggen we verbindingen met onze historie, internationale relaties en
verworvenheden.’
Concerten en lezingen
In aanloop naar de festiviteiten op zaterdag 30 augustus wordt een groot aantal activiteiten georganiseerd,
waaronder het Euregionaal Kamermuziekfestival in samenwerking met Conservatorium Maastricht op
Europadag, vrijdag 9 mei. Verschillende leden van het Comité van Aanbeveling geven in aanloop naar 30 augustus
lezingen waarin ze vanuit hun eigen perspectief 200 jaar Koninkrijk belichten. Eén van deze lezingen vindt plaats
als onderdeel van het Euregionaal Kamermuziekfestival en wordt verzorgd door politicoloog Dr. Eric Lemmens
over de positie van Limburg in 200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden.
Euregional Chamber Music Festival
as part of the Bicentenary celebrations of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
It is the birthday of the Netherlands! In Maastricht, we will celebrate the bicentenary of the Kingdom on 30
August. The National Committee for the Bicentenary of the Kingdom has awarded Maastricht the theme of
international orientation. Maastricht is the most European city of the Nethelands, after all, located right in the
heart of Europe. It has a large number of international students, countless cultural influences from our
neighbouring countries and the ambition to be a city of international encounters. The celebrations on 30 August
will include an international symposium, a large event on and around the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and a festive
evening programme. In addition, a presentation will be given by the Royal Netherlands Army, which is also 200
years old. Naturally, the bicentenary of the Kingdom will be commemorated during the culinary festival
Preuvenemint as well.
Mayor Hoes: 'In Maastricht, we want to lend a touch of international flair to the Kingdom. During events,
concerts, talks, lectures and debates, we establish the links with our history, international relations and
achievements.'
Concerts and Lectures
Numerous activities are being organised in the build-up to the festivities on Saturday 30 August, including the
Euregional Chamber Music Festival in collaboration with the Maastricht Academy of Music on Europe Day,
Friday 9 May. Various members of the Committee of Recommendation will give lectures in the run-up to 30
August, shedding light on the 200 years of the Kingdom from their own perspective. One of these lectures is part
of the Euregional Chamber Music Festival and will be given by political scientist Dr Eric Lemmens, about the
position of Limburg in 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Euregionaal Kamerfestival Maastricht
Vanavond spelen zeven Kamermuziekensembles afkomstig van Conservatoria uit de Euregio. De ensembles zijn
samengesteld door studenten van de conservatoria van Maastricht, Luik en Aken. Om 20:00 en 21:00 uur starten
telkens drie concerten op verschillende locaties: Conservatorium Maastricht, Cellebroederskapel en in Intro in
Situ. In het stadhuis kunt u bovendien om 21:00 uur een lezing bijwonen door politicoloog Dr. Eric Lemmens over
200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden en de positie van de provincie Limburg. Om 22:00 uur kunt eveneens in het
stadhuis luisteren naar het slotconcert met aansluitend een nazit.
Internationale docenten
Vier dagen kregen de zeven euregionale kamermuziekensembles in het Conservatorium Maastricht wisselend les
van diverse conservatoriumdocenten van deze drie Conservatoria: Mia Elezovic (piano, Conservatorium Luik),
Axel Eveaert (solozang Conservatorium Maastricht), Andreas Fröhlich (piano, Conservatorium Aken), Massimo
Paris (altviool, Conservatorium Aken), Alexander Petrash (cello, Conservatorium Maastricht), Jeroen Riemsdijk
(piano, Conservatorium Maastricht) en Vincent Royer (altviool, Conservatorium Luik).
Master Bram van Sambeek
Alle ensembles kregen ook masterclasses van de bekende Bram van Sambeek. Bram van
Sambeek (1980) ontving in 2009 de Nederlandse Muziekprijs, als enige fagottist in de 30
jarige geschiedenis van de prijs. De Nederlandse Muziekprijs is de hoogste
staatsonderscheiding die aan een musicus, werkzaam in de klassieke muziek, kan worden
uitgereikt. In 2011 won hij een Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, en kort geleden werd hij
toegelaten tot het programma “Chamber Music Society Two” van het Lincoln Center in
New York. Van 2002-2011 was hij solofagottist van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest,
en hij is regelmatig te gast als solo fagottist bij het London Symphony Orchestra en het
Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Sinds 2011 besloot Bram zich te focussen op kamermuziek en
solospel, en hij doceert aan het Conservatorium van Rotterdam, Codarts. In de komende
seizoenen zal hij onder anderen het fagotconcert van Kalevi Aho en een nieuw
opdrachtwerk voor een fagotconcert van Sebastian Fagerlund uitvoeren en opnemen voor
het BIS-label.

Euregional Chamber Music Festival Maastricht on Europe Day, 9 May 2014
Tonight you have the opportunity to listen to three of the seven best Chamber Music Ensembles from
conservatoires in the Euregion. They are student ensembles from the Maastricht Academy of Music, the
Conservatoire Royal de Liège and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, Aachen. At 20:00h as well as at
21:00h, three concerts will be held simultaneously at three different locations: the Maastricht Academy of Music,
the Cellebroederskapel (Cellites' Chapel) and Intro in Situ.
At 21:00h the lecture ‘200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the position of the province of Limburg’ by
political scientist Dr Eric Lemmens will start at Maastricht City Hall. Directly after this, the final concert will take
place in the City Hall (followed by a drinks reception).
International lecturers
Over four days at the Maastricht Academy of Music, seven Euregional chamber music ensembles were taught by
various lecturers of these three conservatoires: Mia Elezovic (piano, Conservatoire Royal de Liège), Axel Everaert
(solo singing, Maastricht Academy of Music), Andreas Fröhlich (piano, Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Aachen),
Massimo Paris (viola, Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Aachen), Alexander Petrash (cello, Maastricht Academy of
Music), Jeroen Riemsdijk (piano, Maastricht Academy of Music) and Vincent Royer (viola, Conservatoire Royal de
Liège).
Bram van Sambeek M.Mus.
All ensembles were given masterclasses by the famous Bram van Sambeek. In 2009, Bram van Sambeek (1980) was
the first bassoonist ever to receive the Dutch Music Award (Nederlandse Muziekprijs) in its 30-year history. The
Dutch Music Award is the highest national award a classical musician can receive in the Netherlands. He won a
Borletti Buitoni Trust Award in 2011 and was recently admitted to the “Chamber Music Society Two” programme
of the Lincoln Center in New York. From 2002 to 2011, he was Principal Bassoonist with the Rotterdam
Philharmonic Orchestra, and he regularly performs as a Guest Principal with the London Symphony Orchestra
and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Since 2011, Bram has decided to focus on chamber music and solo
performance, and he teaches the bassoon at the Codarts Conservatoire in Rotterdam. In the coming seasons, he
will be performing the bassoon concerto by Kalevi Aho and a newly commissioned bassoon concerto by Sebastian
Fagerlund, among other works, as well as recording them for the BIS label.

Een eigenaardig kind in de Nederlandse familie…
200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden en de positie van de provincie Limburg
Vorig jaar werd een aanvang gemaakt met de viering van 200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Limburg is een
bijzondere provincie die in de huidige vorm pas sinds 1839 deel uitmaakt van Nederland. De provincie werd in
de 19e eeuw “een eigenaardig kind in de Nederlandse familie” genoemd. Limburg had bij België gehoord en de
Limburgers zelf waren liever Belg gebleven. Of ze wilden zich aansluiten bij Duitsland. Ook vele Nederlanders
waren de provincie liever kwijt dan rijk. Hoe kwam het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden tot stand en hoe verliep
zijn voorgeschiedenis? Welke positie nam de provincie Limburg daarbij in en wat kan worden vermeld over
het moeizame integratieproces dat de Limburgers vervolgens doorliepen?
Dr. Eric Lemmens is politicoloog en promoveerde in 2004 aan de Universiteit Maastricht op een politiekhistorisch onderzoek naar de Limburgse Kamerleden tussen 1839 en 1918. Hij is momenteel werkzaam op het
kabinet van de commissaris van de Koning in de provincie Limburg. Daar houdt hij zich bezig met de euregionale
samenwerking.

An odd child in the Dutch family...
200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the position of the province of Limburg
Celebrations for 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands started last year. Limburg is a special province
which in its current form has only been part of the Netherlands since 1839. In the 19th century, the province
was called "an odd child in the Dutch family". Limburg had belonged to Belgium and its inhabitants would
have preferred to remain Belgians. Some wanted to become part of Germany. Many of the Dutch would have
been happy to get rid of the province. How was the Kingdom of the Netherlands formed, and what was the
history leading up to this? What was the position of the province of Limburg, and what can be said about the
difficult process of integration the Limburgers subsequently had to go through?
Dr Eric Lemmens is a political scientist who obtained his doctorate at Maastricht University in 2004 with a
political-historical thesis on the Limburg Members of Parliament from 1839 to 1918. He currently works at the
cabinet of the King's Commissioner of the province of Limburg, where he is engaged in Euregional cooperation.

Ensembles
String Quartet Aachen
The students of the String Quartet Aachen are from Belgium, Japan, Spain and
the USA. They met at the Aachen conservatoire during a chamber music course
in October 2013 and gave their first concert in February 2014. They enjoyed the
collaboration so much that they decided to continue as a string quartet and
extend their repertoire.
Piano Quintet Da Capo
The Da Capo piano quintet from the Maastricht Academy of Music is a cultural
mixture of nationalities, which leads to highly interesting interpretations. The
quintet is taught by lecturer Alexander Petrasch. In the near future, the
ensemble will be performing various concerts at the Theater aan het Vrijthof,
Centre Ceramique, in Liège and at the Festival Contemporary +. This
Shostakovich quintet aims take the audience on a journey into the unique
musical world Shostakovich created with his multitude of colours and
emotions.
MATrio
MATrio consists of Tahlia DeCorso (piano) from Australia, Aiko Kamishikiryo
(violin) from Japan and Maija Zandberga (flute) from Latvia. These three
Master's students of the Maastricht Academy of Music all won many prizes at
competitions an played with well-known orchestras. They were brought
together by their common ideas and high motivation.
MATrio will treat you to chamber music of a high level.
String Quartet Pax Orbis Maastricht
Pax Orbis is a young Russian string quartet which was established in 2009. All four members of Pax Orbis are
exceptionally talented and have won awards in international competitions as soloists. They are students at the
Maastricht Academy of Music. Pax Orbis has a very extensive repertoire: from Viennese classics to contemporary
composers and, of course, works of Russian origin.

The Marat/de Sade show by Peter Weiss will be performed by Opera students of the Maastricht Academy of Music

Opera La Finta Giardiniera by Mozart (abridged version)
An abridged version of Mozart's opera La Finta Giardiniera (The Pretend Garden-Girl) will be performed by the
Opera Class of the Maastricht Academy of Music. In this opera, a marchioness disguises herself as a gardener in
order to find her beloved count again in another city and win him back. Performed by Solo Singing students and a
small student ensemble of the Maastricht Academy of Music. Jeremy Hulin is the musical director; Martin Schurr
the director.

Overige activiteiten in het kader van 200 jaar Koninkrijk
De Mastreechter Staar geeft een concert op zaterdag 31 mei, met medewerking van een aantal getalenteerde
studenten van Conservatorium Maastricht en met een centrale rol voor Maria van der Hoeven, voorzitter van het
Maastricht Comité van Aanbeveling. Op initiatief van comitélid Camille Oostwegel wordt een kleurwedstrijd voor
alle basisschoolkinderen georganiseerd. Kunstenares en comitélid Keetje Mans ontwerpt hiervoor een speciale
kleurplaat, die begin mei wordt verspreid. De viering van 200 jaar Koninkrijk in Maastricht wordt georganiseerd
door het National Comité, de provincie Limburg en de Gemeente Maastricht. Deze laatste heeft een Maastrichts
Comité van Aanbeveling in het leven geroepen. Verschillende leden van het Comité van Aanbeveling geven in
aanloop naar 30 augustus lezingen waarin ze vanuit hun eigen perspectief 200 jaar Koninkrijk belichten.

Other activities within the framework of the Bicentenary of the Kingdom
Male voice choir Mastreechter Staar will perform a concert on Saturday 31 May, with several talented students of
the Maastricht Academy of Music and with a central role for Maria van der Hoeven, chair of the Maastricht
Committee of Recommendation. On the initiative of committee member Camille Oostwegel, a colouring contest
will be organised for all primary school children. Artist and committee member Keetje Mans is designing a
colouring picture specifically for this purpose, which will be distributed in early May. The Kingdom's bicentenary
celebrations in Maastricht are organised by the National Committee, the Province of Limburg and the
Municipality of Maastricht. The latter has set up a Maastricht Committee of Recommendation. Various members
of the Committee of Recommendation will give lectures in the run-up to 30 August, shedding light on the 200
years of the Kingdom from their own perspective.
