Universiteit Maastricht presenteert haar onderzoek over de invloed van muziek op de hersenen in het seminar ‘Music in the Brain’. Studenten van iArts verenigen kunst en wetenschap in een concept, dat u herkent in de decoratie van Theater aan het

During last year’s festival, the Birdland stage was fully sold out; many people were disappointed because they had to miss the briljant concert of the
Vloeimans-Florizoone duo. So we asked them back this year to the larger main stage. This year with the virtuoso on cello Jörg Brinkmann in their newest production ‘Oliver’s Cinema’ (anagram of Eric’s name). Enjoy the freedom of jazz, the discipline of classical music, the warmth and humour of three happy masters.
Tijdens het festival van vorig jaar was de Birdland zaal volgepakt, en veel
bezoekers moesten het wervelend optreden van het duo Vloeimans-
Florizoone missen. De conclusie was duidelijk: volgend jaar krijgen zij het hoofdpodium. Dit jaar met de virtuoze cellist Jörg Brinkmann in hun nieuwste productie ‘Oliver’s Cinema’
(anagram van Eric’s naam). Geniet van de vrijheid van jazz, de discipline van klassiek, de warmte en humor van drie blije meesters.

Avishai Cohen (Israel 1970) began playing the piano at 9 years old. Inspired by the legendary bassist Jacco Pastorius he changed to bass guitar and acoustic bass. Around the age of 20 he continued his studies and career in New York, where he worked with Chick Corea,
Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock and
Kurt Rosenwinkel among others. Corea calls him a ‘great composer and a genius musician’. His sound is a blend of Middle-Eastern, eastern European and African-American musical idioms.
Avishai Cohen (Israel 1970) begon op
9-jarige leeftijd piano te spelen. Geïnspireerd door bassist Jacco Pastorius schakelde hij over op basgitaar en contrabas. Rond zijn 20e vervolgde hij studie en carrière in New York, waar hij werkte met o.a. Chick Corea,
Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock en
Kurt Rosenwinkel. Corea noemt hem een ’groots componist en geniaal musicus’. Zijn muziek is een mengsel van invloeden uit het Midden Oosten, met Oost Europees en Afro-Amerikaans idioom.

Raul Midón (New Mexico,1966) has a unique musical style with elements of jazz, blues, soul, R&B and folk music.
In his solo performances he combines these styles with his voice, rhythmic guitar and a capella sounds. He enjoys a great popularity in the Netherlands, also because of his special effects like his vocal imitation of a trumpet.
A heart warming concert by an impressive person, whose voice reminds us somewhat of Stevie Wonder.
Raul Midón has been blind since birth.
Raul Midón (New Mexico, 1966) heeft een unieke stijl met elementen van jazz, blues, soul, R&B en folk music.
Het meest interessant zijn de eenmans performances, waarbij hij al zijn stijlen combineert met zang, ritmisch gitaarspel en a capella klanken. Hij geniet in
Nederland grote waardering, ook door zijn special effects zoals zijn vocale imitatie van een trompet. Imponerende artiest en ontwapenend persoon, hartverwarmend concert met een stem die doet denken aan Stevie Wonder. Raul
Midón is blind vanaf zijn geboorte.

The German-Afghan vocalist Simin
Tander has become a star on the Dutch jazz stages. Her performances at North
Sea Jazz, the Bimhuis, Concertgebouw
Amsterdam and her cooperation with
Eric Vloeimans have contributed to that status. In Germany, China, Czech
Republic and Italy too she is receiving growing recognition. She played in the
TV series ‘Tatort’ and ‘Der Kriminalist.
Simin’s style has singer-songwriter characteristics and elements of eastern mysticism. For her latest album ‘Where water travels home’, she learned to sing in Pashto, the language of her father who died when she was a little girl. The CD will appear in spring 2014.

Craig Marvin Taborn (Minneapolis 1970) plays the piano, organ and synthesizer.
He works mostly in jazz, and also does dark ambient and techno music. At an early stage he was influenced by the freedom expressed in the music of Sun
Ra, Cecyl Taylor and The Association of the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Among the numerous musicians he played with, we find the names of James Carter, Chris Potter, Dave
Douglas, Dave Holland. Here is one of the world’s best jazz pianists at work. While listening to his music you discover new horizons.

The Music Academy Big Band, the
largest formation of Conservatory
Maastricht, is conducted by trombonist, arranger and composer Jack Coenen.
Famous guest conductors and soloists worked with this orchestra, like Jerry van Rooyen, John Clyton, Gino Vannelli and Lee Konitz. The band played with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and performed at North Sea Jazz and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
Students of Maastricht Conservatory contribute to four festival productions:
Big Band, Krokoko, ‘Jonge Honden’ and Spontaneous!.
De Music Academy Big Band, het grootste ensemble van Conservatorium

Greg and Piotr Torunski are an unusual combination of virtuosity and fantasy.
The melodic improvisations of Greg’s saxophone are supported by bassy and percussive sounds of Piotr’s bass clarinet. They both studied at Maastricht Conservatory. Ryanne and
Noelle de Bie are gifted vocal talents.
Ryanne won the ‘Talent of Limburg’
Award in 2013. Noelle is equally building a professional career with success.
Greg en Piotr Torunski zijn een ongewone combinatie van virtuositeit en fantasie. De melodieuze improvisatielijnen van Greg worden door Piotr voorzien van bas- en percussiesounds.
Zij volgden beiden hun opleiding aan
Conservatorium Maastricht. Ryanne en Noelle de Bie zijn begenadigde zangtalenten. Ryanne werd in 2013 gekozen tot ‘Het Talent van Limburg’.
Noelle werkt ook met success aan een professionele carrière.

Mario Nappi is een jonge pianist en componist uit Napels met een zuivere benadering van piano en muziek.
In 2013 won hij overtuigend het European Jazz Contest met   85 Europese mededingers. Hij is in Nederland vrijwel onbekend, en wij laten hem graag door u ontdekken. Dit jaar vindt de finale van het European Jazz Contest plaats in Ainsi-Maastricht op 28 mei.

Wanted is an open invitation to musicians to participate one day in a rehearsal and a concert. Jesse Passenier composes for each edition depending from the lineup of the participants, which always leads to surprising concerts with exciting lineups. Specially for the fes tival, he writes in a ‘collage style’ for this orchestra with 19 musicians!

Every month a special event attracts an enthusiastic crowd of young people living in Maastricht. The formula of these
2in1 Evenings is that (at least) two arts merge. In general this happens in the warm and informal atmosphere of Club
Jazz Maastricht at the Capucijnengang.
2in1 is the name of the young artist collective that programs these happenings.
From their ranks emerged Krokoko, a dynamic band of conservatory students.
Elke maand komt een jong en enthousiast publiek naar de 2in1 Evenings, waar minstens twee expressievormen elkaar ontmoeten: two arts merge.
Meestal gebeurt dit in de sfeervolle
Club Jazz Maastricht aan de Capucijnengang. 2in1 is de naam van een collectief jonge kunstenaars, dat deze happenings organiseert. Uit hun midden is Krokoko voortgekomen, een band van conservatoriumstudenten.

De Beren Gieren were the winners of the Jazz Gent festival’s 2009 Young
Talent Award. Live performances of these young musicians are real happenings. Their unpredictible rhythms and overwhelming pleasure in making music are a guarantee for a surprising jazz experience.

De jonge muzikanten zijn live een belevenis. Hun onvoorspelbare ritmes en spetterende spelplezier zorgen voor een virtuoze jazz beleving.

Music has a significant influence on our brains. How this process works is a research project of a team from
Maastricht University, led by Prof. Dr.
Elia Formisano. The project includes the use of brain scanners that are among the most powerful in the world.
Dr. Formisano and colleague Dr. Lauren
Stewart from the University of London will present the research project.
Last year the seminar was such a success that it was decided to continue and extend this initiative.
The seminar is a project of Maastricht
University and the Jazz Maastricht Foundation.

Muziek heeft een grote invloed op onze hersenen. Hoe dit proces in zijn werk gaat wordt onderzocht door een team van Universiteit Maastricht, geleid door Prof. Dr. Elia Formisano.
Daarbij gebruikt men hersenscanners, die tot de krachtigste van de wereld behoren. Dr. Formisano presenteert dit onderzoeksproject samen met
Dr. Lauren Stewart van de University of London. Vorig jaar was dit seminar dermate succesrijk, dat is besloten het initiatief te continueren en uit te bouwen.

Young dancers from 9 to 20 will be confronted with music that teenagers rarely hear. They will exchange their dance with this jazz music, which is in part composed and in part improvised.
A total new challenge for these young pupils of the Kumulus PreDance-
Academy, who don’t know what will happen but will have to react spontaneously in front of the live audience!
The composers and players of the music were inspired by the dancers during the rehearsals, and that will happen again during the performance.
Jonge dansers van 9 tot 20 jaar worden geconfronteerd met muziek, die de gemiddelde jongere zelden te horen krijgt. Zij gaan een wissel werking aan met de jazzmuziek, die deels gecomponeerd en deels geïmproviseerd is. Een totaal nieuwe uitdaging voor deze leerlingen van de Kumulus PreDanceAcademy, die niet weten wat er gaat gebeuren en daarop moeten inspelen terwijl het publiek toekijkt! De componisten en uitvoerders van de muziek zijn conservatoriumstudenten. Zij hebben zich laten inspireren tijdens de repetities van de dansers, en dat gebeurt ook tijdens de uitvoering.

At the age of 9 Ntjam Rosie (1983) moved from Cameroon to Maastricht.
There she grew up while singing pop tunes and dancing. After secondary school she received her musical education at Codarts Rotterdam. Now she is a fashion icon and becoming a music star. Her first album Atouba appeared in 2008: own compositions with influences from jazz, soul, pop and African music. Thanks to her second album
Elle, with a stronger accent on jazz, she received international recognition.
With her third album At the Back of
Beyond – again soul and jazz – she makes a spiritual trip into herself.
A good reason to visit the place of her youth: welcome home Ntjam Rosie!

Rosie (1983) van Kameroen naar
Maastricht. Zingend en dansend op popmuziek groeide ze daar op. Na de middelbare school volgde zij haar opleiding aan het Rotterdams conservatorium Codarts. Ze is een bekend fotomodel en bezig een muzikale ster te worden. In 2008 verscheen haar debuutalbum Atouba: eigen composities met jazz, soul, pop en Afrikaanse invloeden. Haar tweede album Elle, met een sterker accent op jazz, betekende haar internationale doorbraak.
Met haar derde album At the Back of
Beyond onderneemt ze een spirituele reis naar binnen. Een goede reden om de plek van haar jeugd te bezoeken: welcome home Ntjam Rosie!

At first sight The Bad Plus (USA) seems a standard piano trio, but a bit of listening makes it clear that for these gentlemen rules are there to be broken and genres don’t exist. They play and revise works of Igor Stravinsky, Blondie,
Radiohead, Nirvana and others. They have made an important contribution to the renewal of jazz, like their fellowthinkers E.S.T. and Avishai Cohen.
Few jazz groups in recent memory have amassed such acclaim, and few have inspired such controversy. Are they jazz musicians, who are influenced by rock, or is this a power trio that likes to play jazz? Find out for yourself.
Op het eerste gezicht lijkt The Bad Plus
(USA) een standaard piano trio, maar als je naar ze luistert is het duidelijk, dat zij het principe erop nahouden dat regels er zijn om gebroken te worden en genres niet bestaan. Ze spelen en bewerken nummers van Igor Stravinsky en Blondie, Radiohead en Nirvana.
Zij hebben de jazz behoorlijk vernieuwd, evenals hun geestverwanten E.S.T. en
Avishai Cohen. Weinig groepen krijgen zoveel bijval, en weinig maken zoveel controversiële reacties los. Jazzmusici, die door rock zijn beïnvloed, of een power trio dat ook graag jazz speelt?
Zoekt u het maar uit.
