THE COTTON CLUB By: Alex Ortiz THE MOST FAMOUS NIGHT CLUB • Staring some of the most famous jazz and blues artists from Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker to even Mae West have made an appearance at the Cotton Club. Even had the Ellington orchestra. ONE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG'S FAMOUS SONGS. HE HAD MANY MORE SONGS TH AT WERE COMMON DURING THE JAZZ AGE. ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA. The Ellington band was very famous during the roaring 20’s. The roaring 20’s was a time of great enjoyment . Many younger adults were out having funs as well as the teens. They partied all night and had under age drinking at the Cotton Club. They lived life to how they saw fit at this teen of jazz and the blues. BILLIE HOLIDAY One of the most beautiful singers at this time and was very respected amongst the community. Joe” King” Oliver Joe "King" Oliver was born May 11, 1885 and died on April 10, 1938. He was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly noted for his playing style, pioneering the use of mutes. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played regularly. “The Cotton Club” The Cotton club attracted a lot of attention and gained publicity do to the artist that preformed there but after it shut down it wasn’t like it use to be. TH JAZZ AGE • . Music hit main stream fast. The African American artist started to be on the radio and heard all across the country. That influenced many people to come out of the wood work and express themselves to the world • Now people started to hear the music that broke through the sound barrier for the first time ever. It amazed the community and was an upbringing that no one saw coming. I admit that this was a great age for the music industry. “THE END OF THE COTTON CLUB” The cotton club ended do to the Harlem riots. It continued on truly but was never the same. The real jazz age has came and gone. Nevertheless it open a great amount of opportunities for the jazz players. As well as for the people that produced their music.
