RADICAL CALL
Mark 1:16–20 (ESV) Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and
Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of
men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a
little farther, he saw James the son of
Zebedee and John his brother, who were in
their boat mending the nets. 20 And
immediately he called them, and they left
their father Zebedee in the boat with the
hired servants and followed him.

RADICAL CALL
Not first encounter
John 1:35-42
Not first encounter
John 1:35–42 (ESV) The next day again John was standing with two of his
disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the
Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed
Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are
you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where
are you staying?” . . . 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed
Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother
Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon
the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

come follow Me – a command, not an invitation
immediately drop nets and follow
call appears ambiguous
response appears impetuous

APPLICATION:
Kairos Moments & Seasons
1.
Are you alert to God’s kairos moments? (in your life and world)
2. What are some of God’s Kairos events/seasons in your life and what’s
God’s working in that event/season?
APPLICATION:
Privileged Calling
ALERT: Jesus’ Warning!
Matthew 23:8–10 (NIV84) “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you
have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on
earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you
to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
APPLICATION:
Privileged Calling
1.
Is Jesus your rabbi, teacher, master? (do you follow Him, memorize
His words, learn His interpretations of Scripture, live like Him, and
multiply Jesus’ life in others?)
2. Are you available? (is your life disentangled so that you can respond
to Jesus’ calling to you no matter what, when, and where that call
involves?)
Parting Exhortation:
• The call to discipleship is an invitation to you…today.
• The role of a disciple today is no different than the role of a disciple
in the first century.
• We are called to follow Rabbi Jesus.
• It is our role to memorize his words.
• It is our role to learn his traditions and interpretations of scripture.
• It is our role to imitate his actions.
• It is our role to raise up more disciples for him.
