Books have always been important to me; however one should not forget that there is also another way to correctly read a sculptor’s work and more specifically the work of the master Andrea Roggi of Arezzo. A sculpture, whether it is made of bronze, marble, travertine, stone, wood or iron, has a tight relationship with the material which is used to create it. Some art critics have rarely taken this kind of necessary interpretation into account. It is not possible to talk or write about sculpture in the same way as it is done about painting, music, dance or other forms of art. In the past stars were stars, now they are only systems. Flight no longer has any value, calculation does. But there is something more: intuition. In other words, the need to use art to express the deepest anthropological essence of man, whose integrity is threatened by the circumstances of history. In his artistic path Andrea Roggi shows an intimate and deep bond with classical sculpture, its emotions and the eternal myths that represent mankind’s constant wondering about the meaning of life and its digging into the collective unconscious. Today’s world, on the contrary, is totally expressionist. It is an agitated world whose restlessness spreads out like waves originating from an upset epicentre. And that is the world we live in. We are born as children and we live of a kind of infantile poetry that, in the course of our life, evolves with all its tragedies and anxieties. Through the eternal symbols the modern man no longer invokes Apollo, but rather Saint Francis or Saint Catherine, and the concept of being is replaced by the idea of becoming, that is the doubt which relativizes every truth. Andrea Roggi’s works are characterized by irony, drama, tragedy as well as by the artist’s own poetry, which conveys his strong and confident personality. Born in a country that witnessed the passage of the Etruscans and the Romans, Roggi is inseparably tied to his land where men turn into olive trees. Moving towards Cortona and Umbria, he then traces the steps of Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Margaret of Cortona and Saint Catherine of Siena. According to Roggi, today’s man belongs to the world; being means participating, living with others and for others. The work of art has always represented an image, a sign, a 8 memory, an icon of the part of the divine which is handed down to posterity: the evidence of the passage of man. Roggi accomplishes this with the poetry of a child who does not live like a parasite but adheres like a creeping plant to the surface of an image and takes its form. In this way, with his works Andrea Roggi achieves universality. Prof. Gilberto Madioni 9 Andrea Roggi Andrea Roggi studio’s Biography A ndrea Roggi was born on July 2nd 1962 in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany While still in his teenage years, the artist began to cultivate some of his many interests, including painting and poetry, until he gradually focused on sculpture. To expand his knowledge of sculptural techniques, he attended for a short period of time the studio of Enzo Scatragli, a fellow artist and himself a native son of Castiglion Fiorentino. But the event that marked a true artistic turning point in his life came when he visited the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, where he was literally spellbound by the strong plastic effect of The Trinity, a fresco by Renaissance painter and countryman Masaccio. In 1991 he set up the art workshop “La Scultura di Andrea Roggi”, where he crafts his sculptures from start to finish and, with the help of his assistants, he manages to create large-sized yet finely detailed pieces. Bronze is his material of choice, which he puts through the long casting process to finally transform the clay models into metal sculptures. He has produced a number of public artworks in Italy, located mainly in Tuscany and Umbria. In the late 90s he became the initiator of the “Art for Young” movement, aimed at awakening an appreciation of art and all art forms in young people. The movement has culminated in the inauguration of the Creativity Park (Parco della Creatività), its crowning achievement. Since the year 2000, Roggi has been pursuing a fruitful collaboration with the University of Georgia, based in Castiglion Fiorentino, and the University of Texas, based in Cortona, where he holds workshops and courses on sculptural techniques. In the early 2000s, he became fascinated with one of Arezzo's most prominent intellectual figures, Pier Francesco Greci, and with his theories about the art of Piero della Francesca. Roggi's works are featured in many art collections around the world and he has participated in various national and international exhibitions held at major venues such as the Olympia Grand Hall in London, the Ahoy in Rotterdam; the Grand Palais in Paris, the Fukuoka Oishi Gallery and Fukuoka City Museum in Japan. Some of his pieces are on permanent display at the Creativity Park (Parco della Creatività, in Manciano, Castiglion Fiorentino) and at The Circle of Life Art Gallery in Cortona. 13 Silence 2000 bronze cm 30 x 30 Instants of paradise A ndrea Roggi is an all-round artist because he has always loved art in its widest sense, in all its forms and variations, especially poetry, painting and sculpture, which has been for many years now the emotional climax of his extremely fertile and untiring creativity. He feels especially captivated by nature, by its perpetual cycle of creation and regeneration, by the mysterious flow of life in its most awesome and enchanting manifestations. He takes also a keen interest in the unpredictable and complex entanglements of human life, which he constantly investigates, venturing into its deepest and most secret recesses. His strong focus on the “human mystery” is clearly visible in his sculptural artworks: by painstakingly digging in and mining out the smallest details he adds to the overall quality of relief of the human figure, explored in its inscrutable uniqueness. Most of all, Roggi seems receptive to the dreamy and wonderful world of childhood, because he loves the games, the dreams and the irrepressible, indomitable creativity that kids so brilliantly display in every situation of daily life. That is why, when approaching the realm of children, he feels somewhat like a child again, and is able to draw abundantly on a limitless source of pure imagination, amusement and playful joy… playing is living. On the whole, all of Roggi's works reveal a relentless quest to gain an insight into the fascinating mystery of life, whether it's the life running through the many different creatures of Nature or the life that is ineffably expressed by the multifaceted, extraordinarily rich and intriguing world of human beings. The playful side, apparent in all his works, is a hallmark of Roggi's art: every piece seems to reveal an existential meditation, bearing witness to a life lived to the fullest. In short, they convey a satisfied and satisfying vision of nature and human existence, disclosed in their most varied and meaningful vitality. 17 Sculptures Tree of life Golden living shining M ost certainly among the symbols of greatest interest in Western iconography, the Tree of Life appears in virtually all the most ancient religions, including Babylonian, Indian and Jewish traditions (i.e. the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Old Testament). This motif is so widespread among European and Asian cultures that it is almost impossible to find a single civilization where it is not known and portrayed in at least some artistic works. Apparently, the earliest artistic portrayals are those found in ancient Mesopotamia (e.g. the magnificent Assyrian bas-reliefs), where the Tree of Life was part of the main ritual performed by the Babylonian king. It is believed that these representations have subsequently originated, by contiguous dissemination, all other trees of life found in cultures and arts of neighboring areas, throughout Mediterranean, Asian, and Nordic regions. In essence, it is a metaphysical motif, a traditional and primordial symbol inherited by all men, whose meaning derives mainly from those pagan populations that, from the East, spread out across the Eurasian and North African continents, giving rise to the different civilizations that have developed, thrived and followed one another over the course of history. The leitmotif of Andrea Roggi's works, metaphorically represented by the Tree of Life, both in its iconographic meaning and as a symbol of plant life, is depicted by taking inspiration from the natural surroundings of his atelier in Castiglion Fiorentino, made of century-old olive and cypress trees. As human figures integrate with the plant forms, they fuse into a seamless whole imbued with a sort of "magic realism", where the diverse elements blend together creating artworks dazzling with intricate detailing and charm. Through the iconography of the Tree of Life, Andrea Roggi communicates a sense of belonging to the native land. 23 Tree of Life by David Gollins O nce upon a summers time Man lived and spoke with trees In natures garden girt by myrtle leaves; And in that garden grew the tree of life, With deep roots to stand the changing winds of time; With branches spread to catch our fortunes clime; With leaves to draw the energy of light Transmuting the suns burning rays To green shades Of golden living sight. T he tree of life has a sap, First blood of earths creation; Changing our barren spinning world Into a growing living mould Of organic life. We are all this growing tree, This liquid sap of life’s creation; From one chopped stump a young growth unfurls, A new beginning from earths root stock; From old and deep to young and green Ever living and ever seen. 24 Now, on the tree, first fruits were born, The natural seeds of loves sweet dawn. T he mothers hug, the lovers kiss, The genesis of freedoms intoxicating bliss; But with that freedom came the fruits of sin First fruits of mans inventive whim; And round those sweet fruits their grew the thorn And man with Gods relation torn. Once upon a summers time M an lived and spoke with trees, In natures garden girt by myrtle leaves, And in that garden once their grew the tree of life But now no more. S o let all mankind take note; Our choice is but a tossing boat; We are all but parts of one stupendous sea; This is the timeless message of the tree. Similarly, inner thoughts and visions filtered by the creative self, sometimes, come close together, united through the common denominators of fantasy and poetry, combining wishes, aspirations, the spirit of freedom and conquest, and finally fuelling "abstraction" possibilities, as can be seen in the artworks about Knowledge, where these thoughts turn into hard bronze. 51 Knowledge Knowledge in the sky 2006 bronze height cm 150 52 53 Knowledge Knowledge flight 2008 bronze height cm 300 54 55 Knowledge Knowledge freedom 2008 bronze height cm 230 56 57 Knowledge Knowledge dance 2012 bronze height cm 210 58 59 Knowledge In Flight 2014 bronze cm 300 60 61 Knowledge Birth of an idea 2014 bronze cm 300 62 63 Knowledge Family flight 2014 bronze height cm 330 64 65 The Game of Life Life plays with strength A ccording to common interpretation, play activities are marginal to human existence, contrasting starkly with work and more “serious” pursuits. In adult life, playtime is often dedicated to repetitive pastimes, which usually betray the fact that they arise from boredom. For a child, instead, playing is a “healthy way of living”. When playing children develop an “openness to the world”. The concept of play is characterized by total gratuitousness, freedom, and a sense of joy for the tangible world, where the “pleasure of appearance” is experienced. However, human play is perceived as an “oasis of happiness” because, as obligations, work, concerns and responsibilities absorb all the energies of growing children, it risks losing all of its original meaning and thus cease to be a spontaneous action, a vital force. Andrea Roggi’s sculptures perfectly reflect the ontological nature of play, with dreamlike scenes bursting with minstrels, storytellers, children and flying women, all ready to have fun and engage and entertain the onlookers. 69 The Game of Life Life Circle 1990 bronze height cm 50 70 71 The Game of Life First Kiss 1991 bronze diameter cm 50 72 73 The Game of Life Brotherhoood 1996 resina diameter cm 50 74 75 The Game of Life Imagine 2008 bronze diameter cm 120 76 77 The Game of Life Imagine 2011 bronze diameter cm 90 78 79 The Game of Life Imagine 2012 bronze diameter cm 150 80 81 Flying outside Flying outside Storyteller 2008 bronze diameter cm 350 84 85 Flying outside Love in flight 2008 bronze and stainless steel height cm 50 86 87 Flying outside Solidarity 2009 bronze diameter cm 80 88 89 Flying outside Family in flight 2014 bronze and stainless steel diameter cm 60 90 91 Flying outside Family in flight 2014 bronze and stainless steel diameter cm 80 92 93 Time after time Time after time Dream 1985 bronze height cm 90 96 97 Time after time Inside you 1987 bronze height cm 100 98 99 Time after time Freedom 1987 bronze height cm 90 100 101 Time after time Return from the dream 1988 bronze height cm 70 102 103 Time after time Extasy 1989 bronze height cm 80 104 105 Time after time Tuscans’s Trace 2002 bronze height cm 50 106 107 Time after time Eve and Adam 2005 bronze height cm 40 108 109 Time after time Adam and Eve 2005 bronze height cm 60 110 111 Time after time Hope 2007 bronze width cm 110 112 113 Time after time Family 2010 bronze diameter cm 100 114 115 Public Work Memory in urban spaces M onumental sculptures created by Andrea Roggi over the last twenty years were specially designed as public artworks, through which the artist’s personal reactions come into direct contact with the spectator. Andrea crafts works of great artistic value by delving deep into his soul and recreating the existing world through the lens of a newly found truth, so much so that each and every one of his sculptures is a precise metaphor of life, but also a different and divergent representation of life itself. Roggi’s monumental sculptures have today been tasked with acting on the urban landscape, highlighting the value of memories and eliminating the risk of anonymity. The interior universe of the Cortona-based gallery – an area occupying one hundred square meters and revolving around the concept of space as an aseptic container, made of white surfaces alternating with concrete and glass structures – is the perfect setting for the works of Andrea Roggi, the master called upon to interact with the environment while interpreting it. The Circle of Life works together with private and public institutions and takes part in international art fairs. The gallery enriches every exhibition by publishing books with introductory essays by curators and intellectuals. A reason for great pride, and deserved recognition, for the gallery is that it not only offers unique, internationally acclaimed works of art, but also a sound investment for the future. 215 216 217 218 Note Note The Freedom 1982, pastel on paper
