In the exhibition The Pink Spy Narcisse Tordoir tells stories in an
intuitive and associative manner about existential man in an
unsettled world, assigning the main role to the figure of ‘the
Oriental’. The Pink Spy consists of five different elements: new work
by Tordoir himself, two series of etchings by Giambattista Tiepolo,
works from the M HKA collection, works on loan from the Barjeel
Art Foundation in Sharjah, and work by unknown young artists.
At the Rockox House you get a better idea of what an Antwerp
art collection would have looked like in the city’s Golden Age.
The home of Mayor Nicolaas Rockox (1560-1640), a prominent
art patron, is turned into a luxurious art room with masterpieces
on loan from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and some of the
most important works from the museum’s own collection. Enjoy
stunning paintings by masters such as Rogier Van der Weyden,
Hans Memling, Jan Van Eyck, Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Anthony
van Dyck.

The First World War had a drastic impact on the lives and (early)
careers of artists on both sides of the Front. Despite being a shared
experience, the War is far from being a common denominator in
their work, however. The Middelheim Museum puts these artists
and their work back in the spotlight with a temporary laid out
walking route through the open air museum and past the Braem
Pavilion. In the Braem Pavilion itself, special attention is paid to
the sculptures of the German artist Käthe Kollwitz.

May - July MAS
An My Lê left her native Vietnam as a 15-year-old political refugee.
From 1994 she began returning there regularly, and was affected
by the landscape, which she started photographing in large-format
black and white images. She did so not so much as a reflection on
the war, but rather out of a desire to reconcile her youthful memories of this immensely damaged landscape with the reality of nature
today. It is her way of capturing in images an escape from a conflict
zone. Three series of these panoramic landscapes have been brought
together under the title ‘Small Wars’ to form an impressive pictorial
narrative that is being shown in Europe for the first time.
