– in search of present time Literature / Fine arts / Contemporary debate 10TAL is the foremost Swedish magazine on literature, art and contemporary debate. Since 1980 we have had our eyes focused on national and international movements and cultural phenomena of our time. www.10tal.se INTRODUCTION by Madeleine Grive Poems are materialised dreams that can re-invent the world. Poetry is the incitement of our creative work: the magazine 10TAL, the imprint 10TAL Bok, and the Stockholm International Poetry Festival. In this spirit we wish to realize a spearing landscape for the critical potential of literature. We have 33 years of experience in magazine publishing as well as in arranging cultural, literary and artistic events for adults, adolescents and children. Literature is the primary focus of our events. However, we mix it up with elements of music, performance and visual art, as we strive to bring together the most innovative authors, artists, musicians, dancers, actors and performance artists of our time. 10TAL works outside of commercial consideration and we advocate critical optimism; we believe in the ability to change the world through language. Words are music and serenity. Words can give peace and proclaim revolution. Words can never be imprisoned. 10TAL enunciates what gathers people here and now: the time we share on earth, the exploration of inner and outer worlds through literature and art. Our motto is ‘In search of present time’. The festival is the single most recognised poetry festival in Scandinavia; it is a meeting point where many international poets have been introduced to the Swedish audience. With the Stockholm International Poetry Festival 10TAL wants to present the most important, engaging and creative poetry being written in the world today. We firmly believe that there is a need in the world for poetry and dreams, and that poetry shows us ways towards development and change. The Stockholm International Poetry Festival, hosted at the Royal Dramatic Theatre and at the Stockholm City Theatre, springs from a wish for poetry to take new shapes and directions by giving it a scenic expression. The festival serves as a melting pot where the written word meets music, dance and performance, and in that encounter creates something new. To the festival newly written texts and art pieces are produced by the participating artists. In collaboration with musicians, actors, dancers and artists we create one-of-a-kind unforgettable experiences for the audience and the participants. We are now looking forward to November and the festival of 2013. In its 33 years of existence, 10TAL – formerly known as 80TAL, 90TAL and 00TAL – has scrutinised contemporary tendencies in essays, interviews, articles, fiction and art projects. We regard our issues as research projects on modern-day movements, and have produced special-edition issues on topics such as ecology in art, the literary debut, the Arab spring, intellectual responsibility, motherhood, the brain, hypochondria, happiness and word wars. Our aim is to reach beyond the boundaries created between art, literature and science, and 10TAL regularly invites artists, writers and scholars from many different fields to participate in debate. We feel it is of the utmost importance to widen the research in these varying subject areas, and extend its reach to a broader audience. 10TAL issue no 12/13, 2013 On ecology in literature and art 00TAL issue no 24/25, 2007 On faith & doubt 90TAL issue no 16, 1995 On the cover: Swedish authors, artists and critics: Eva Runefelt, Madeleine Grive, Carl Johan de Geer, Horace Engdahl, Bodil Malmsten, Rawia Morra, Stig Larsson, Li Li, Ann Jäderlund and Jonas Gardell. 80TAL issue no 17/18, 1984 On the cover: Photo from Northern Ireland by Maud Nycander. The Children’s Poetry Festival is one of 10TAL’s annual events, and since 1998 we have created poetry cabarets with themes such as “Ghosts”, “Love”, “Dogs”, “Space” and “Birds”. We believe that it is important to give children cultural and intellectual stimulation. The main goal of the festival is to encourage reading and to stimulate creativity in order to enable children to express themselves. In collaboration with Sweden’s leading papers and national radio and TV shows for children, we arrange a yearly national poetry competition. The winners get to read their poems on stage at the festival. For the past six years composer Georg Riedel, famous for the soundtracks of Astrid Lindgren’s films, has composed the music for the festival. Throughout the years we have also had renowned writers, actors, musicians and artists take part in our productions. THE POETRY FACTORY A workshop that encourages young writers to enter the world of poetry. 10TAL visits the suburbs of Stockholm to read poetry and teach creative writing to children and young adults. The Poetry Factory aims to inspire children and young adults to use literature as a source of knowledge for independent thinking and writing. It is all about making language and poetry available on the children’s own terms, whilst broadening their knowledge and frames of reference. KLUBB 10TAL A literary club with the purpose of bringing forward innovative, progressive young artists and writers, and to serve as a meeting point and source of inspiration for young people interested in culture. Our vision is to savour the beauty in literature in an intimate pub environment, by integrating literary readings with underground acts, music and art. We have had performances and readings by: Charles Bernstein, Giannina Braschi, Laura Restrepo, Bruno K. Öijer, Lukas Moodysson, Li Li, Carl-Johan Vallgren, Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Ernst Billgren, Barys Pjatrovitj, Virpi Pahkinen, Bergman Rock, Sara Stridsberg, Mårten Spångberg and many more. SEMINARS, DEBATES & LITERARY READINGS 10TAL’s seminars, debates and literary readings focus on themes hand-picked from our magazine. They are aimed at an audience that believes in discussion as a way of acquiring and increasing knowledge and understanding. In 2012 we arranged a seminar with some of the female freedom fighters from the Arabic revolution, in collaboration with the Royal Dramatic Theatre and Svenska PEN’s women’s committee. Participants included blogger Lina Ben Mhenni of Tunisia and author Hala al Badry from Egypt. Seminars, readings and performances at the Nobel Museum in Gamla stan, Stockholm. May 17th 2013. 1.
