Government
• The political status of the Palestinian territories is
one of the most violently disputed aspects of the
Arab-Israeli Conflict
• Two rival factions administer the territories –
Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Fatah in the West Bank

• Economic conditions deteriorated in the 1990s
due to corruption and Israeli closure policies
– Up until the 1990s, about 150,000 Palestinians
worked in construction in Israel
