Edgar Allen Poe
He’s best known for his poems and short fiction.
He was born in Boston in 1809 and died in
Baltimore in 1849.
He deserves more credit than any other writer
for the transformation of the short story from
anecdote to art. He virtually created the
detective story and perfected the psychological
thriller.

 POEMS:The book once again reprinted the
long poems "Tamerlane" and "Al Aaraaf" but
also six previously unpublished poems
including early versions of "To Helen,"
"Israfel," and "The City in the Sea."[27]
Israfel (1831)
 Written while Poe was at West Point, "Israfel" is a
poem in eight stanzas of varying lengths that was
first published in April 1831 in Poems of Edgar A.
Poe.
 It was re-worked and republished for the August
1836 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger.
 In an introduction to the poem, Poe says that Israfel
is described in the Koran as an angel whose heart
is a lute and who has "the sweetest voice of all
God's creatures." His song quiets the stars, the
poem says, while the Earth-bound poet is limited in
his own "music." Hervey Allen likened Poe himself to
Israfel and titled his 1934 biography Israfel: The Life
and Times of Edgar Allan Poe.
Al Aaraaf (1829)
 This poem is based on stories from the as
depicted in Sura 7 of the Qur'an, and tells of the
afterlife in a place called Al Aaraaf: a star that
was the place between paradise and hell.
 Poe included it as the major poem in his 1829
collection Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor
Poems.
 Al Aaraaf" mixes of historical facts, religious
mythology and elements of Poe's imagination.
The poem primarily focuses on the afterlife,
ideal love, and ideal beauty to passion, and has
no discernible poetic rhythm when read
 He also produced some of the most influential
literary criticism of his time and has had a
worldwide influence on literature.
 As for his early life , he was the son of actress
Eliza Poe and actor David Poe .
 In 1827 , he published his first book , ‘
Tamerlane and other poems’ anonymously
under the signature ‘ A Bostanion’ . The poems
were heavily influenced from Byron and showed
of a youthful attitude.
 Before he was able to enter West Point ,
Edgar published a book entitled ‘ Al Aaaraaf ,
Tamerlane and minor poems .’
 This time the book was published not
anonymously but under the name of himself ,
Edgar Allan Poe.
Before Edgar left West Point , he published a
third edition of the book.
He called it a second edition and it was entitled
‘ Poems by Edgar Allan Poe’ in which his
poems ‘ To Helen’ and ‘ Israfel’ appeared .

 In some of his works : terror and horror are the
main subjects.
 He used gothic novel in his works. For example
; ghosts were used in ‘Ligeria’.
 Poe is the father of the romanticism in
American literature and he wrote policy novels
such as ‘ Gold Bug ‘.
 He was an American poet, critic , short story
writer and the author of ‘ The Fall of the
House of the Usher ‘.

 Poe’s source of happiness was writing
poetry, but he also raised the short story to
an art form and was one of the first to write
dedective story .
 His dark , gothic tales of mystery and
imagination had heavy influence on the

 The poem is a direct contrast to Poe’s usual poetry ,
which usually deal with death and dark thoughts or
other melancholy , gothic ideas , Poe’s idea of the
death of beautiful woman .A stanza from Israfel ;

He might not sing so wildly well
