• The book is set across various countries in Europe during WWII. The story focuses on the lives of the soldiers of Easy Company, whom are assigned to the 101 st Airborne Division. They were the men who spearheaded the invasion on D-day and remained on the frontlines for a majority of the war. The novel depicts the men’s time in various training camps, to the invasion of D-day, and to the Battle of Bastogne. The story depicts the company’s true feelings on the war, they contemplate on why they fight, and describes the true meaning of brotherhood.
• Throughout the story, the men emphasize on the need for a strong leader and one who knows how to take action and get the job done, like Captain Winters
– In order to be in the 101 st Airborne division, each soldier is expected to take care of themselves while also looking after their “brothers”

• The men of Easy company formed everlasting bonds that were similar to that of a family
– They went through rigorous training together in order to become the elite 101 st airborne division, and complete nearly impossible tasks such as Carentan and Bastogne together, while no other division could accomplish it.
– Even after the war and 40+ years later, all the surviving members keep in contact
– Each man in Easy company knew each other’s names
• The men of Easy company endured the most rigorous training and were dropped into the middle of the nightmarish events of WWII
– Every man in Easy company saw their closest friends die right in front of them, but could not do anything but move forward
• Ex. Sgt. Malarkey had three of his closest friends die in front of him during the events in Carentan
• Death and violence became a normal part of their lives
