Our Question
Compare the traits of an Ancient and a Modern
leader. The leaders we have chosen are the
ancient emperor Qin Shi Huangdi and the
leader of the 20th century Chinese Revolution,
Mao Zedong.

Qin Shi Huangdi
• The Ancient leader we have chosen is Qin Shi
Huangdi.
• These are the traits of Qin Shi Huangdi that we have
found:
– Great builder (ordered people to build the Great
Wall of China)
– Unified China and established a strong empire
– Not open to criticism
– Harsh and strict leader
– Conqueror ( went all over China, and conquered
land)

Great Builder and Unifier
• The first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, he ruled
China for 37 years (246-210 B.C.).
• He conquered the states that were fighting
among each other and united China for the
first time under a strong Central Government.
• He was a great builder, he started the building
of the “The Great Wall of China” to defend
China against the nomadic tribes in the north.
• He established the Chinese writing system.

the law and punished people very
harshly

he burned some of the ancient

Mao Zedong: Soldier and Rebel
• He was born in rich peasant family on
December 26, 1893. He first became a farmer
then went back to school and in 1912
participated in the revolution against the Qi
dynasty.
• He fought against the rich landowners and
was a leader of the Chinese Civil War. He also
fought against the Japanese invasion of China.

Leader of the Revolution
• Mao ‘s revolutionary ideas came from his
beliefs in Marxism, which is a philosophy that
says that all the resources of a country belong
to all the people who should share it together.
• He became the leader of the Chinese
Communist Party which won the war against
another group and took control of the
government and created the Popular Republic
of China.

Thinker and Poet
• Mao Zedong was very influenced by the
economic and political ideas of Karl Marx and
Lenin but he also established his own
philosophy known today as Maoism.
• Poet and writer he wrote many books about
his philosophy, the most famous one is the
Red Book

• He was the leader of People Republic of China
for more than 27 years. He changed the life of
Chinese people to the better but also caused
the death of many others because of
problems caused by his government. This led
to famine and also persecution of people who
did not agree with the government.

How are their traits different?
• Some of the traits Qin Shi Huangdi and Mao
Zedong are different because Qin Shi Huangdi
was a great builder who ordered people to
build the Great Wall of China while Mao
Zedong was a solider, who lead the Chinese
Revolution.
• Mao Zedong had a philosophy and was a
writer and a poet but Emperor Qin was a man
of government who used only the law.

How are their traits alike?
• Qin Shi Huangdi and Mao Zedong’s traits are
alike because they both didn’t share power.
• Both were strong rulers who caused the death
of many of their people.
• On a positive side, they are alike because they
both unified China and created a strong China.
Conclusion
• Ancient and Modern leaders of China, Qin Shi
Huangdi and Mao Zedong unified China
under a strong government and changed the
lives of people.
• Years after both of them died they are still
remembered:
– Huangdi for the discovery of his grave with
thousands of Terra Cotta Warriors.
– Mao Zedong is considered the “Father of Modern
China” .
