Welcome 1 - He Has Made Me Glad 103 I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart, I will enter His courts with praise. I will say this is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice for He has made me glad. He has made me glad, He has made me glad, I will rejoice for He has made me glad. He has made me glad. What If The Cliche Isn’t Enough? •We never truly know how we’ll react to a situation until we are actually faced with it. •So Peter discovered. All his preparations and all his intentions proved to be insufficient when he was faced with a truly challenging situation. •Can a deeper understanding of the events surrounding Peter’s denial of Christ help us to remain faithful when we are faced with overwhelming situations? Peter’s View of Himself • How Peter saw himself could have contributed to his failure when faced with the challenge of the crowd. • What were the views Peter had of himself that might have triggered the denial of Jesus in the courtyard? Peter Saw Himself as STRONG • Matthew 26:31-33 -- Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.‘ • 32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." • 33Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." Peter Saw Himself as FAITHFUL • Luke 22:33 -- But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." • Peter Saw Himself as LOYAL • Matthew 26:35 -- But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. Peter Saw Himself As STEADFAST Mark 14:27-31 -- "You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today— yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times." 31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same. Peter Out of His Element •He was ready to die – but Jesus wanted him to live •He was ready to fight – but Jesus wanted peace Matthew 5:9 -- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. John 14:27 -- Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. • Peter was ready to defend – but Jesus had to surrender • John 12:27 -- Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Peter and Peer Pressure: What Could Have Helped? • Peer pressure is a temptation to do what will please the crowd. • There are several human emotions which contribute to peer pressure – Fear – Anxiety – Acceptance How Can We Resist Peer Pressure? • • • • Through Through Through Through prayer: Luke 21:36 confidence: 2 Timothy 1:7 humbleness: 1 Corinthians 10:12 faith: Philippians 4:13 1 – The Great Physician 291 1.
