The Apostrophe
By: Sarah, Emily, Emma
To form the possessive of a
singular noun, add an apostrophe
and an ‘s’.
Here are some examples:
Girl + ‘s = Girl’s
Boy + ‘s = Boy’s
Man + ‘s = Man’s
Chris + ‘s = Chris’s
The girl’s hair is brown.
The boy’s jeans are black.
The man’s car is blue.
Chris’s dog is a golden retriever.
To form the possessive of a plural
noun that does not end in ‘s’ ,
add an apostrophe and an ‘s’.
Here are some examples:
Men’s
Women’s
Children’s
You have to go into the men’s room.
The women’s soccer team won their
game yesterday.
The children’s parents went to the
daycare to pick them up.
To form the possessive of a plural
noun that ends in ‘s’, add only a
apostrophe.

Gymnasts’
The teachers’ meetings are always
held in the library.
The gymnasts’ coach makes them
work hard and do their best.
Use an apostrophe and an a ‘s’ to
form the possessive of indefinite
pronouns.
Here are some examples:

Anybody’s

the floor.
It could be anybody’s game now!
Never use an apostrophe in a
possessive pronoun, such as ours and
yours.
Use an apostrophe in a
contraction.
In a contraction, the apostrophe
simply replaces one or more
letters.
Here are some examples:
He’s = he is
Aren’t = are not
I’m = I am
It’s = it is
Won’t = will not
Don’t = do not
Use an apostrophe to show the
omission of number in a date.
Here are some examples:
The class of ‘17 (The class of 2017)
The fall of ‘99 (The fall of 1999)
When we graduate, we will be the class of ‘17.
I was born in the fall of ‘99.
Use an apostrophe and ‘s’ to form
the plurals of letters, figures, and
words used as words.
Here are some examples:
Four A’s
Three 7’s
If’s
And’s
But’s
I got four A’s on my report card.
I only have three 7’s in my deck of cards.
No if’s, and’s, or but’s about it.
