Case Study: The Impact of Social Media on University Students
Introduction
Social media has become an important part of university students’ daily lives. Platforms
such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn are used for
communication, entertainment, networking, and academic collaboration.
Background
University students often use social media to exchange notes, participate in
study groups, discover educational resources, and communicate with classmates.
However, frequent use can also create distractions and reduce the amount of time
available for studying.
Case Analysis
A hypothetical survey of 100 university students found that most students used social
media every day. Many reported that academic group chats helped them coordinate
assignments and share resources. At the same time, some students reported difficulty
concentrating because of notifications and entertainment content.
The case illustrates that social media can have both positive and negative effects. Its
impact depends partly on how students use it and whether they can manage their time
effectively.
Conclusion
Social media can support university education by improving communication,
collaboration, and access to information. However, excessive or uncontrolled use may
interfere with concentration and academic work. Students can benefit from establishing
clear boundaries between academic and recreational use.
