Sense- bio system
- Detects form of physical energy
- Transduces into neural
- Allows brain to interpret
1. Physical energy
a. Light, sound. Pressure
2. Transduction
a. Energy → chemistry → voltage
3. Action potential
4. Dedicated pathway to primary cortext
a. Through thalamus first (all senses BUT
smell)
Vision:
Photons are units that quantify light waves
Light- subset of electromagnetic radiation
Visible: 400-700 nanometres
We detect NOT absorbed but reflected
Retina → ganglion cells
Why have 2 eyes? 3D and depth perception (binocular disparity)
Saccades- eyes moving unconsciously (too fast to perceive)
Cornea- bends light entering eye
Iris- muscle that determines how much light enters (creates pupil)
Lens- changes shape to focus light onto retina (far and near)
- Cilairy muscles
Retina- layer of neurons on the back of the eye
- Photorecepters (rods and cones)
- Bipolar
- Ganglion (to the brain)
