Assignments are intended to ensure that you will be able to fully engage and successfully complete the course while meeting the Student Learning Outcomes, Therefore, I ask you to keep current with class assignments. The best learning experience & deeper understanding happens when you keep pace with the posted due dates. Additionally, engaging in reading and lab assignments in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help during office hours or by posting on Q & A forums. Keep in mind that you will struggle while you learn, perhaps even make mistakes and that is ok! Don't let that keep you from trying, on the contrary think of it as a growth opportunity! I am asked every semester if students can turn in late assignments. I understand that life happens and there are times when turning in an assignment by the due date is just not going to happen. This puts both of us in a peculiar situation! I want to be able to help out but I can’t always do so. When students ask about late assignments, I have to take into account how the assignment impacts the flow of the course and the goals for what you take away from this course. With both of these in mind the following policy seems to work best: Homework: Late submission is allowed but 20% of the homework grade is deducted for each day after the submission due date. Lab Assignments: are hands-on exercises where you get to implement what your learned up until each chapter and contribute 21% of your course grade. I would love to accept late assignments always. However, that will make you fall further behind since there are weekly assignments. However, I must limit the number and times of late submissions to 1. keep you from falling further behind. Please remember that I am here to help and I am only a Q & A forum post away as are your peers. You can get the help you need and be on your way to successfully complete and submit. It is important to begin working on your Labs early and not to waste time struggling by yourself. Seek Help! https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/108909/external_tools/49660 9/19 9/2/26, 8:04 AM CIS 103 31140 Computer Programming Logic - Simple Syllabus 2. provide feedback before the next lab is due so that you have a chance to correct your mistakes and hence improve your lab grades. Also, it will not be fair for students that submit timely to allow submissions after feedback is provided. I encourage you & hope you know that it is in your best interest to submit all assignments on time, but I understand that sometimes circumstances arise that are beyond our control. Late lab assignments are accepted for full credit only when under extenuating circumstances that can be evidenced with documents. If that occurs, please let me know at your earliest convenience so I can create a different lab assignment. Assignments submitted late without prior approval will not be eligible for full credit. You will be allowed to turn in two lab assignments late throughout the semester for 70% of the grade, if submitted before labs are graded and feedback is provided. No explanation needed. However, please keep in mind that I will do my best to complete my grading quickly. Exception: No late submission for extra credit activities which are due on the Monday of the 2nd week and last class assignments that are due during the final week. Exam Policy Exams: There are three module exams and a final exam. All students must take all exams as scheduled (see course schedule). Final Exam: is on December 15, 2026. Please add it to your Calendar immediately. Make-up Exam Policy: No make-up examination unless under extenuating circumstances that can be evidenced with documents such as serious illness and with prior arrangement. No make-up on Final Exam. Extra Credit: There are no extra credit activities. However, I will give a letter grade boost for students who fully completed and submitted introduction activities before the due date, continued to work hard, & turn in all assignments timely but fell a little short of the next letter grade at the end of the semester. https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/108909/external_tools/49660 10/19 9/2/26, 8:04 AM CIS 103 31140 Computer Programming Logic - Simple Syllabus Attendance Policy (In Person) Participation: Class participation is an important component of learning that affect all students and it is essential to achieving a course’s educational objectives & student learning outcomes. Students are expected to participate in class discussions. I will keep track of your participation through weekly activities. There are no points awarded for just logging in to Canvas. Attendance Policy: Success in an online course is achieved by participating in the course, asking questions, proposing answers, submitting assignments, and collaborating with your peers. You'll have many opportunities to participate in the coming weeks, but remember that simply logging onto Canvas does not count as participation. You must complete assignments located in the modules each week to show your attendance. Assignments submitted must be on topic and related to the course content. Drop or Withdraw Policy Drop/Withdrawal Policy Students who miss an exam without instructor's permission or fail to submit three graded assignments will be dropped from the course if it is before the drop deadline. However, please do not depend on the instructor to drop you from this or any class--not dropping a class that you stop attending may result in failing the course. Instructor permission is given only based on valid evidence. Graded assignments include homework, and lab assignments. It is the student's responsibility to communicate and seek help to avoid being dropped from the class. If you decide to drop/withdraw, you must do it officially before the drop/withdrawal deadline to avoid a failing grade. Please see dates below. DO NOT count on me to drop you! If you stop participating after the Drop Deadline, I cannot drop you and you will receive the letter grade associated with points earned, which will probably be an “F”. https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/108909/external_tools/49660 11/19 9/2/26, 8:04 AM CIS 103 31140 Computer Programming Logic - Simple Syllabus Withdrawal: Pursuant to Title 5, section 58004 and Cerritos College Board Policy, it is the student’s responsibility to participate fully in class(es), once enrollment is complete. However, should it become necessary to withdraw from class, it is the student’s responsibility to drop in person in the Admissions and Records Office or through MyCerritos. THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILTY OF WITHDRAWAL FALLS TO THE STUDENT. ALL WITHDRAWALS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE LISTED DEADLINES. FAILURE TO OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW FROM CLASS(ES) MAY RESULT IN AN “F/FW” GRADE FOR EACH CLASS. See the “Session Dates and Deadlines” in the Schedule of Classes for specific deadlines. Drop and Add Deadlines Withdrawal Date (without losing registration fee): 9/15/2026 Withdrawal Date without a W: 9/23/2026 Last Day to Withdraw with a W: 11/19/2026 Incompletes If a student is in good standing in class but unable to complete the course due to an emergency or other valid reason at the end of the term, the student can request an incomplete grade from the instructor which will appear as an “I” on the transcript. The student will have one year to complete the remaining work and receive a final grade for the course or the incomplete will revert to the course grade prior to the end of the term. Artificial Intelligence AI Use Prohibited The use of generative AI tools—including but not limited to large language model chatbots and AI image generators such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DALL-E, whether accessed directly or through another platform—for any part of this course, including assignments, projects, and exams, is strictly prohibited. Students are expected to complete all work independently, demonstrating their understanding and analytical skills without AI assistance. The use of these tools to generate or complete assignments will be treated as academic dishonesty and may result in disciplinary action. Students are encouraged to seek guidance from the instructor if they need support with assignments or to understand the course material. https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/108909/external_tools/49660 15/19 9/2/26, 8:04 AM CIS 103 31140 Computer Programming Logic - Simple Syllabus AI Use Only with Instructor Permission The use of generative AI tools (such as large language model chatbots and AI image generators ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DALL-E, whether accessed directly or through another platform) for assignments requires prior approval from the instructor. When permitted, AI may assist with brainstorming, outlining, or language refinement. However, the use of AI for core analysis, research conclusions, or final drafting without permission is not allowed. Unauthorized use of AI may result in academic penalties, and students who have received approval must provide a description of how they used the AI tool and cite any generated content. This approach ensures that AI serves as a supplementary tool rather than replacing individual work. Limited AI Use for Specific Assignments Only Generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DALL-E, and others, may be used only for specific assignments as indicated by the instructor in this course. When permitted, AI can aid in generating ideas, drafting initial versions, or organizing information. For these designated assignments, students must document how AI was used and the extent of its influence on their final work, either through citations or an additional statement. For all other assignments where AI is not explicitly allowed, its use is prohibited and will be treated as academic misconduct if used improperly. Selective AI Use for Research or Drafting Only Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DALL-E may be used for initial research, brainstorming, or drafting ideas, but students must ensure that all final submissions reflect their independent work. AI can assist with generating topic ideas, clarifying concepts, or producing rough drafts, but all arguments and conclusions should be the student's original analysis. Students should be prepared to discuss and demonstrate their understanding of their work, as reliance on AI should not replace personal comprehension of the material. Guided AI Use with Citation Students may use AI tools, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DALLE, to support their learning and writing, but must clearly cite any AI-generated https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/108909/external_tools/49660 16/19 9/2/26, 8:04 AM CIS 103 31140 Computer Programming Logic - Simple Syllabus content or assistance in their assignments. Appropriate use includes using AI for brainstorming, structuring ideas, or refining language; however, the core arguments and ideas should be the student’s own. Any AI-generated text or concepts included in the final submission should be identified and attributed to the tool used. Misrepresenting AI-generated content as one’s own original work is considered academic dishonesty and may result in penalties. Unrestricted Use of AI Students are encouraged to use generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and DALL-E, to enhance their learning, research, and assignments. These tools can be useful for brainstorming ideas, developing outlines, or drafting text, as well as generating insights for more complex projects. However, students are responsible for verifying the accuracy of any AI-generated information and ensuring the originality of their submissions. Proper citation of AI assistance is expected wherever relevant, in accordance with course-specific attribution guidelines. Learning and Career Pathways Choosing a major can be hard.
