How does your body get
nutrients out of food?
Our hero
today

Outline the definition of the
digestive system.
Group of organs that work together to
break down food into small molecules
that can help pass through the blood
where they are used by the body
Mouth
Food is chewed and mixed with saliva
Teeth help break down food into smaller
particles
Oesophagus
Food pass down this tube
Stomach
Food is mixed with the digestive
juices and acids.
Small intestine
Digestive juices from the
pancreas and the liver are added
for complete digestion. Small
nutrient molecules pass through
the intestine wall into the blood.
Large intestine
Only food that cannot be digested reach the large
intestine. Water passes back into the body leaving a
solid waste of undigested food. Called “ faeces”
Rectum
Faeces are stored here until they leave the body.
Anus
A ring of muscles through which faeces pass out of the
body.
Do you remeber
the importance of
fibers for
digestion?
Fibers add bulk to food where
muscles push the bulk along the
digestive system
peristalsis
Peristalsis is a series of wavelike muscle contractions
that move food through the digestive tract.
It starts in the esophagus where strong wave-like
motions of the smooth muscle move balls of
swallowed food to the stomach.
, the food moves into the small intestine where
peristalsis continues.

Which organ is responsible for the following functions:
Organ
Function
Food is chewed and mixed with saliva
Water is absorbed back into the body
Food is mixed with acids and digestive juices
Faeces are stored here until they pass out of the body
Small molecules of nutrients are absorbed into the blood
How do the
nutrients pass
into the blood?
Small intestine has to absorb nutrients before
undigested food get out of the body.
The wall of the small intestine is thin covered with
tiny structures called villi. They stick out of the wall
and give it a big surface area. The villi contain blood
capillaries to absorb small nutrients so they can
move around the body

of the digestive system.

fibers
