During a morning routine, you assist Willow to undress and get into the bathtub. Once in the bathtub, Willow starts to vomit and have watery diarrhoea. It is determined that Willow has gastroenteritis, which is an illness that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. This illness is highly contagious and easily transmitted between people. Following her diagnosis, Willow is frail and experiencing muscle weakness. She has trouble reaching the bathroom and requests a bedpan. You assist Willow with this but have concerns about further transmission if waste is not disposed of correctly. You are concerned about Willow’s wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of her roommate, Laurel, and the other residents of the facility. Approximately six hours after Willow’s diagnosis of gastroenteritis her roommate, Laurel, is demonstrating symptoms that suggest she may also have contracted the illness. Laurel also has a persistent cough and appears to have a build-up of sputum on her lungs, which causes her to cough sporadically and not have an opportunity to cover her mouth. This causes these bodily fluids to splatter. Q 1. To: Eleanora Fagon From: Ayoube Amahzoune Date: 3/08/2026 Subject: Concern regarding infection control practice during outbreak Dear Eleonora Fagon, I am writing to report an infection control risk I have identified during the current gastroenteritis outbreak. I noticed that a colleague was not changing his gloves between assisting different residents and believed there was no need to do so. This practice may increase the risk of cross-contamination because germs can be transferred from one resident to another through contaminated gloves. This could effect residents , staff members and visitors by increasing the spread of infection within the facility. I suggest that the control measures should include reminding staff about correct PPE procedures, providing further education about hand hygiene and gloves changes, and monitoring infection control practices to ensure they are followed. Could you please advise what actions the organisation would like me to take regarding this situation and if there are any further steps I should follow? Thank you for your support.
