OBJECTIVE

To investigate the differences in
composition between inspired
and expired air:
In this experiment, limewater will
be used to compare the levels of
carbon dioxide in inhaled and
exhaled air. The aim is to carefully
observe the changes and use these
observations to draw meaningful
conclusions.
SAFETY
Limewater is an irritant;
avoid getting it in your
mouth.
Wear safety goggles when
breathing in and out through
the tubing.
Do not suck hard through
the rubber tubing.
Ensure the rubber tubing is
thoroughly cleaned before
use.
Use a new piece of tubing for
each person who uses the
apparatus.

Place one straw or
breathing tube into each
container of limewater.
Ensure the tubes are long
enough to reach the
limewater.
Place your mouth on
the rubber tubing and
inhale air through your
mouth representing
inspired air and then
exhale air through your
mouth representing
expired air

OBSERVATION
Repeat step 3 multiple times to notice
change in the limewater. If the
limewater turns milky or cloudy it indicates
carbon dioxide is present.
Notice - The test tube B will turn more
milky /cloudy whereas
test tube A will turn not very milky / cloudy

CONCLUSION
We can now conclude that
expired air consist of more Carbon
dioxide compared to inspired air
because when limewater gets
reacts with carbon dioxide it turns
limewater milky .
