Objective: Students will draw meaning from the story Paddle-to-the-Sea as they make connections, answer open-ended questions, form opinions, and recall details. They will also understand different aspects of Great Lakes history as it relates to Indian culture, as well as economic development. Materials Needed The book Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling Copies of pages to be used from packet for each student Colored pencils or crayons for “Journey Tracker” map activity Separate sheets of notebook paper for task card activities Craft or construction paper for various task card activities Suggestions for Use Distribute comprehension pages before reading each chapter. Read the questions before reading the chapter to give students a purpose for reading and to promote active listening. Answer questions in class discussions, with partners or small groups, or individually depending on student abilities and class goals. Distribute the “Journey Tracker” mapping activity before reading the book and complete as the book is read. Each student could keep this activity in a pocket folder or file folder. If you are limited on printing/copying, you could have students complete this activity in small groups, or just complete one as a class, giving students turns to complete the mapping activities. The “Legends of the Lakes” activity could also be completed in small groups or individually. Briefly study the shape/outline of the lake you have been assigned. 2. Decide what you believe the shape of the lake resembles or looks like. You may use the suggestions from the book Paddle-to-the-Sea, or you may come up with your own idea. 3. Create a legend for the lake which tells a story based on the shape of the lake. For example: The book suggests that Lake Superior is in the shape of a wolf ’s head. A legend about a wolf could have been told by the Indian tribes who lived near that lake which would also reflect a belief about the purpose of the lake. Suggestions for use: Students can complete the following “Legends of the Lakes” pages either in- dividually or in groups. Students should create a rough draft on a separate sheet of paper and use the worksheets from this section for their final copy. An extra sheet of notebook paper can be stapled to the worksheet if addi- tional space is needed for the legend written. If students complete this activity in groups, each group could be given a dif- ferent lake to create a legend for, then compile the legends into a “Legends of the Lakes” booklet with a cover created by the students. Display in your school library or other prominent area. Another group option is to assign a different lake to each member of the group, then compile a group booklet.
