NONVERBAL RULES ACTIVITY
There are many “rules” of nonverbal behavior that are widely adhered to in our culture, but rarely, if ever,
verbalized. Here are some examples:
When entering an elevator with people you don’t know, move to the farthest corner
Don’t wear house slippers to school
Don’t brush your teeth in a drinking fountain.
When receiving a gift, control your facial expressions and tone of voice to show approval rather
than disapproval.
5. When ending a conversation, decrease eye contact.

Your group’s task is to come up with two examples of other unspoken nonverbal rules that govern behavior
in the following situations:
1. When visiting someone in the hospital.
2. When using a public restroom.
3. While shopping at the mall.
4. While attending a funeral.
