Topic: Fasting and its Virtue
Fasting is known as “Roza” in Urdu. The word “Saum” is used in Arabic for fasting. The literal
meaning of “Saum” is ‘to stop’ or ‘prevent’. In Islamic terminology, it means to avoid eating, drinking
and other emotional desires from dawn to dusk as a worship of Allah.
Importance and Virtue:
Fasting makes a person pious as said in the Quran:
O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you— so
perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.
Prophet (PBUH) said that:
Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and
hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.
Fasting is a shield like the shield of any one of you in battle.
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said that a person who fastens gets 2
happiness. First, at dusk when he breaks his fast and second, when he will get the reward of the
fasting.
The Prophet (PBUH) said that the reward of Ibn Adam (people) is multiplied and becomes 10 to
700 times the actual reward except the reward of fasting. Because the fasting is for Allah, he will
personally reward the person.
It means that the reward of fasting is very high and immeasurable. According to one Hadith, among
the 8 doors of Paradise, 1 door is especially for those who fast. That specific door is known as
‘Rayyaan”.
Fasting is special as it is a hidden worship which cannot be seen by anyone. It is a secret between
Allah and the worshipper. It is difficult in comparison to other worships as it requires a person to avoid
eating and drinking.
Fasting helps a person to gain ‘Taqwa’. It means that a person should feel himself in the surveillance
of Allah as he is watching and knows every moment of every person individually. He knows the
thoughts of a person as well. A person who fastens gains ‘Taqwa’ and avoids all the sins and tries to
spend his life according to the will of Allah.
For this worship, Allah specified the month of Ramadhan in which fasting is obligatory on every
sane Muslim adult. There are many virtues of this month. The Quran was revealed in this month in
the night of ‘Qadr’. Allah says that this night is better than 1000 months. Allah captures satin during
this whole month. Any sin done in this month is actually the doing of a person himself. This month
is a best practice to recognize those sins and prevent them from happening again. Allah opens the
doors of Heaven and closes the doors of Hell.
Ahadith explains the virtue of a person who helps other people in breaking their fast. The Prophet
(PBUH) said that a person who helps other person in opening his fast will get the reward of that
person’s fast as well.
Some of the main things especially done in Ramadhan are Fasting, the worship in night (Qiyam ul
layl), recitation of the Quran, donations, aitikaf, finding the night of power or Laylatul Qadr).
Etiquette(Rituals) of Fasting:
It is necessary to intend before fasting as it is a worship. Eating at dawn and dusk is Sunnah. It is said
to not to delay eating at dusk. The reward of all worships multiplies in this month. All the good deeds
should be done in this month. A person should avoid every kind of sin in this month as it becomes
easy to avoid them as the satin is locked in this whole month. Fasting isn’t just stopping from eating
and drinking, it requires that a person should avoid and stop from every kind of sin. A person who
doesn’t avoid any sin will not be given the reward of fasting.

for ten days just for worshipping without any thought and talk about world. It is Sunnah and has a
lot of reward. The Quran was revealed in the last ten days of Ramadhan. A person is not allowed to
leave the mosque in these days except for a very valid reason. The Prophet (PBUH) said that find
