Engineering Thermodynamics Tutorial
Week 1 (Homework)
Problem 3:
3 kg of saturated liquid water at 160°C is heated at constant pressure in a piston cylinder
device until it is saturated vapor. Then the water is cooled at constant volume to 120 °C.
Sketch both processes on T – υ and p – υ diagrams; determine the heat transfer required for
heating; and determine the mass of vapor present at the end?
Problem 4:
Water in a piston-cylinder assembly as in the figure below. Initially the water is water at1.5
bar and a quality of 55%. Then the water is heated at constant pressure until the piston
touches the stopper. Heat is continued until all the water is saturated vapor. Determine:
a. Process schematic in T-v diagram
b. Specific volume at the initial and at the final state
c. Work (in kJ/kg).
d. Overall Heat transferred (in kJ/kg).
