The discussion of child behaviors and affective parenting has opened my eyes in a couple of
ways. I see the wisdom my parents used in parenting, I also have confirmation of the ways I see
parents doing things wrong, and I see that I can improve in many ways.
I have always thought my parents did a good job of raising me and my siblings. The discussion
of parenting has opened my eyes to knowing that psychology backs up this way of parenting,
and there are good reasons for doing these things. This is important to me because I am not
always happy with my parents and seeing this makes it easier to be happy with how I was
raised. The complaints I have are dwarfed by what I do have.
More importantly though, it has confirmed what I view as ineffective parenting. While going to
mass on Sundays, or anywhere for that matter, I have seen many parents vainly trying to stop
their very young kids from doing things or being noisy. I have often thought that parents don’t
seem to know that their kids are not exactly logical at this early age, I see a lot reasoning with
kids and very little discipline or stopping kids from being naughty. Looking at this from the
context, young kids are more like rats than adults, really makes sense for I have not seen this
parenting style be very effective, and I have seen the opposite be effective. It is great to know
that kids that behave and listen to their parents are not just “good kids”, but that by good
parenting they became good kids.
Most importantly though, this discussion has brought to light my own ratishness. “I don’t want
you to do the dishes I want you to want to do the dishes”, this has really shown me how I can
always improve in this way, especially in wanting to do homework. I think that most college kids
would benefit from becoming less ratish in this respect, for most of us seem to dislike homework
even if it is beneficial to us. I say beneficial for I do not think it is bad for people to dislike
useless classes. I was really struck when you mentioned that college kids are the only people
that are happy to get less for their money. Through the semester this has really helped me to
enjoy my classes.
In conclusion, I can say that I have learned a lot in this class. It has helped me see things better
and realize things that have and will help me live a good life.
