Assignment 1
Engineering Thermodynamics (S4 ME )
1. Explain ideal gas temperature scale
2. The temperature t on a thermometric scale is defined in terms of a property K by the relation
t = a ln K + b where a and b are constants. The values of K are found to be 1.83 and 6.78 at
the ice point and the steam point, the temperatures of which are assigned the numbers 0
and 100 respectively. Determine the temperature corresponding to a reading of K equal to
2.42 on the thermometer.
3. A new “X” absolute temperature scale is proposed, and a value of 2000 X is assigned to the
boiling point of water. Find the ice point on this scale, and its relation to the Kelvin scale
4. Give the classification of thermometers and elaborate
𝑘𝐽
5. The specific internal energy of a fluid is given in ⁄ 0 as 𝑢 = 196 + 0.718 𝑡. Determine
𝑘𝑔 𝐶
the specific heat at constant pressure.
6. A turbo compressor delivers 2.33 m³/s at 0.276 MPa, 43°C which is heated at this pressure to
430°C and finally expanded in a turbine which delivers 1860 kW. During the expansion, there
is a heat transfer of 0.09 MJ/s to the surroundings. The air velocity at turbine inlet is 25 m/s
and at exhaust is 150 m/s; elevation change is 10 m. Calculate the turbine exhaust
temperature.
7. A pump steadily delivers water at 0.05 m³/s from a 15 cm diameter inlet pipe to an 18 cm
diameter pipe located 150 m higher. Inlet and exit pressures are both approximately 1 bar,
with constant temperature of 20°C throughout. Determine the required pump power
8. A rigid 2 m³ tank initially holds air at 100 kPa, 25°C and a valve connects it to a supply line at
600 kPa, 25°C. The valve opens, allowing air to flow in until tank pressure equals 600 kPa, at
which point the valve closes and tank temperature reads 80°C. Calculate (a) mass of air
added and (b) heat transferred during filling.
9. 1 kg of air at 4 bar and 150°C undergoes reversible expansion to 1.01325 bar, followed by
constant pressure heating where heat content increases by 72.5 kJ. Calculate:
i) Total work done
ii) Pressure and temperature at the end of constant pressure process
iii) Polytropic index n if replaced by single reversible polytropic process giving same work
between initial and final states.
Take Cp = 1 kJ/kg·K, Cv = 0.714 kJ/kg·K.
10. With the aid of neat schematic diagrams, explain how the steady flow energy equation is
applied in each of the following engineering systems
a) Nozzle
b) Diffuser
c) Pump
d) Turbine
e) Compressor
f) Throttling device
