After reading part 2 of Orwell’s 1949, I learned that doing censorship plays dangerous
role in our lives. As I read in the novel, the government not only censors information but
also constantly rewrites history, changes facts, destroys evidence of the past, and
controls what people believe. By doing these, citizens become blind to truth and
information. When people can’t show who they are and what they want, it make them
totally rely on the government. So they can’t make their own decisions and even don’t
get basic freedom. That’s how a society becomes trapped, like the citizens, Winston and
Julia in 1984 who always believe whatever Big Brother tells them.
On the other hand, censorship isn’t really bad. In nowadays, we use internet quite a lot
that we ever imagined. Through internet, people express their expressions also include
writing hate speech, spreading incorrect information and uploading harmful contents. So
censorship can protect those which is not necessarily in society. It can help people feel
safe and prevent chaos or fear.
So, in my opinion, censorship can help people from different perspectives. The only
thing is that we need to use that in the correct way carefully and transparently.
Otherwise, it could kill truth and freedom just like in the Orwell.
